Page 9 of Taming the Beasts
Bennett stopped when he reached the vault I’d broken into earlier. “How did you know the code?” he asked and slammed my back against the cold, hard metal vault door.
God.This was exactly what I’d requested. I was really liking how this punishment was playing out.
“Zoey.” He gripped my chin tightly between his fingers.
“I saw you type it in. When you were showing me and Emma the relics.”
“You memorized it?”
“Yes.”
“Hmm.” His eyes bore into mine. “Interesting.”
“I’m good at stuff like this. I want to be one of you.”
He slowly shook his head. “No, you really don’t.”
I didn’t think we were talking about thievery anymore. I was pretty sure he was referring to being a werecat. And he looked so damn sad about it. I knew he thought he was a monster. But he wasn’t. Not now, not ever. And it killed me that he couldn’t see how wonderful he was.
I clenched around him.
He groaned. “You’re not coming anytime soon, baby. So don’t even try.”
Bennett was going to be the death of me.
A buzzing noise echoed around the bank.
Even though we were in the middle of fucking, Bennett pulled out his phone. He swiped his thumb across the screen and stared at a message. His eyes met mine again. “Titan says you took something from the vault. What was it?”
Titan was rewatching the footage right now? I looked up at the camera. I wondered what he’d be thinking when he fast-forwarded to the present moment. I knew how much he liked watching. Just as much as I liked being watched.
Bennett groaned.
And I realized that the thought of Titan watching had me gripping Bennett tighter. This was why we all worked so well together. This is why I didn’t want anything to change.
He pulled me off the vault door. “Type in the code.” He grabbed one of my hands, removing it from his hair, and placed it in front of the display.
It only took me a few seconds to type it in.
The vault door hissed.
“Titan said he saw something in your hand. But he couldn’t make it out. Tell me what you took.”
“I didn’t take anything that belongs to you. I swear.” That was the truth. None of the stuff in that vault belonged to them. They’d stolen all of it.
Bennett lowered his eyebrows as he stared at me. And I swear he could see right into my soul.
“She took something,” Bennett said. He was looking at me, but he definitely wasn’t talking to me. “Check it out.” He stepped away from the door.
Ace and Huxley walked toward the vault. Huxley spun the wheel and there was a mechanical whooshing noise as the heavy metal door sprung forward.
Did they have an inventory sheet of everything in that vault? It almost seemed like a bad idea to write any of it down since it was all stolen. They’d accumulated those items over years. They couldn’t possibly know every single relic hidden in there.
Bennett slammed my back against the next vault door.Hisvault door. And then he gently kissed the side of my neck. The contrast of the cold hard metal and his soft kisses had me gripping him tight again.
“Tell me what you took,” he whispered against my skin before placing another kiss at the base of my neck.
“I didn’t take anything that was yours,” I said again. I still wanted to get to surprise them. “Bennett, I swear.”
