“ H ey Sadie, where do you want this table?” Josh asked as he walked up to her open garage carrying a large folding table.
“Oh perfect, can you just set it up next to that one. I have another box of her flowers to unpack.”
“Sure thing,” he said as she laid the table down.
Sadie walked over to help him flip out the leg as they turned the table upright. “Would you mind helping me get the last couple boxes out so I can set them up?”
“Of course.”
She climbed the stairs in the garage into the kitchen with Josh following behind her.
“Wow, this place is looking really nice.”
Sadie stopped and looked around. The pink carpet and flowered wallpaper were a thing of the past. She and Lucas had been working hard on it the past couple months. She had new hardwood floors and things were coming along. “Do you want to see the music room?”
“I would love to.”
She led him into what had previously been her formal living room.
Now it had dark wood floors with a beautiful rug.
The grand piano was still there, but the walls were a dark green.
On one side hung her guitar and banjo, sitting next to a cozy gold couch.
Over the fireplace was a big art piece featuring old country albums Lucas had made for her for Christmas.
“Wow, it looks great in here.”
“Thanks, I’m really happy with how it turned out.”
“How are things coming with Liam?”
“Good, we have a couple songs ready to record when his band shows up. I think they are going to stay here and I’m just going to stay over with Lucas.”
“Did I hear my name?” Lucas asked as he made his way in the back door.
“Sadie was just showing me all the work you guys have done. It looks great.”
“Thanks,” he said as she walked in and slipped his arm around her waist.
“Is Poppy home with the new baby?”
Josh nodded.
“How are you guys handling two?”
“Nights are long, but I’m surrounded by my girls. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Are these the boxes you want to set out on the table for you?” Josh asked, pointing to the two boxes next to the door.
“Yep.”
“Okay, I’ll get these out for you, then I have to run to the hardware store, but I’ll stop over later and get me and Poppy something from Rosemary’s Garden.”
Lucas picked up the other box and they followed Josh.
They had two tables in the garage and two on the front lawn set up with all the flower figures and everything else that used to be in the house.
Sadie never was able to part with them, but she’d had an idea over the winter about giving them away.
Which gave her the idea of setting up Rosemary’s Garden.
She’s setting up the flowers like a garage sale, only she’s not selling them. She’s giving them away to anyone who wants a Ms. Maple keepsake. Of course, the town instantly got behind her and it was only a matter of time before they all arrived.
“We better get this last table set up quickly. I think the first visitors are here,” Lucas nodded over to his parents who were walking up the drive.
“My this is quite the set up. Do you guys need any help?” asked Mrs. Fipp as she pulled Sadie into a hug.
“No, I just need to unpack these last two boxes, and we are all set. Please, find something you’d like to take.”
Just then the sounds of Dolly filled the air as Lucas brought out a speaker. “I thought it was only fitting,” he said with a soft smile.
“It’s perfect.”
After a long day of the entire town stopping by and sharing stories about her aunt and taking a keepsake Sadie and Lucas were exhausted. They were curled up with George in the basement.
“I think today went really well,” Sadie said.
“It did,” Lucas said as she tucked a lock of hair behind her ear.
“I learned so much about her I didn’t know. I think she really would have liked it.”
“When is the band showing up? I wanna make sure I have all the main work done before then.”
“I think Liam said he wanted to start officially recording in June, so we still have some time.”
They settled back in and watched the TV as Sadie’s eyes kept getting heavy.
“Why don’t we head up to bed?” Lucas said with a yawn.
“I’m not ready for bed.”
“Songbird, you can hardly keep your eyes open.”
“I know,” she said with a devilish grin. “Maybe I am ready for bed, but not for sleep just yet.”
Lucas hummed. “I like the way you think.”
He stood so quickly off the couch George gave a disgruntled little meow.
He offered Sadie a hand helping her off the couch before guiding her to bed.
While she still had her house and she did spend time there.
Most of her nights were spent with Lucas either in her bed or his.
He truly was the best neighbor she’d ever had, and he was just about to show her why.
The next morning when they finally decided to get out of bed Lucas had just put on a pot of coffee and Sadie had put on a record as she went to the front door to get the Mystic Falls Gazette for the Sunday crossword.
But when she opened the door, she found a plant on her front step with a note.
My dear Sadie,
I know the point of yesterday was for people to take flowers, but I decided to leave you one. Plant this magical little rose in the sun and I promise you the most beautiful rose garden in honor of you and your aunt.
Both of you came to Mystic Falls in search of a fresh start and each of you found your true home. Just like this plant you put down roots in the magic that lives here. I know you will thrive just like these little flowers.
Sadly, the time has come for me to move on from my time in this magical little place. Bridget’s Magic Store is moving on to another little place to sow the seeds of love that have taken root here.
Love
Bridget
She picked up the plant and brought it in with the letter in her other hand.
“What’s that?” asked Lucas.
“It’s a rose plant from Bridget.”
“Oh, that’s so nice. I’ll get it planted for you this week. Did you get the crossword?”
“Yeah, it’s right here.”
They settled into their morning and did the crossword and slowly drank their coffee, but she couldn’t help but think about Bridget’s letter.
“What’s a five-letter word for ‘bout on skates’?”
“Derby?”
“Bridget left a letter with the roses. She’s apparently leaving Mystic Falls,” Sadie said.
“Oh, that makes me sad. I’ll miss her nonsense.”
“She really did have the best nonsense,” Sadie said. “And in a way she played a huge part in getting us together. We’ll have to find a beautiful place to plant the roses as a tribute to her and Auntie Rose.”
“Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.”
When she looked up from the paper Lucas was just looking at her with a look on his face. “What?” she asked.
“I just love you.”
She leaned over the table and kissed him. “I love you too.”
Then they both settled into the crossword and their wonderful slow Sunday enjoying each other before returning to bed where they enjoyed each other's love even more.
It had been over a year since Sadie started the journey of trying to find love on a reality show. It had been a painful journey at point along the way, but in the end, it got here right where she was always meant to be. And life here on Apple Tree Lane was pretty magical.
