NOTHING BUT REGRETS
Staring at my bloodied knuckles, I make a fist, ignoring the pain it causes. My brothers and I stand around Cassian’s laptop, waiting for whatever it is he has to say.
“The phone you found in your dad’s office was a burner phone, so I’ve been trying to track where it came from.
I’ve narrowed it down to a store about thirty minutes from here.
I’m working on getting the camera footage from the area, so we can maybe see who purchased it.
” Cassian points to several things on his screen as he speaks, but I don’t pay attention to any of them.
I can’t.
Jordyn left.
I gave her the option to go.
She could have stayed.
I wanted her to.
Last night wasn’t just sex. It wasn’t fucking.
It was us, baring our souls and then making love to each other.
At least, I thought that’s what it was.
Was she playing me this entire time?
Making me fall for her so I’d cave and let her go?
It’s easy to assume that. I wasn’t lying to her when I said trusting people is hard.
When Cassian stops talking and walks away to sit down at a nearby table, the four of us head for the exit for some fresh air and a place to talk.
As soon as we step out the door, I light up a cigarette and take a cleansing breath as the nicotine hits me.
These things will kill me one day, but without my kitten, I might as well be dead anyway.
“Send some of our men to collect Elliott Carver,” I tell Beckett.
“Seems he’s been hiding a lot from me lately.
He’s trying to play me for a fool, and that’s a big mistake on his end.
” I take a long drag and roll my shoulders.
“I’ve got a feeling that motherfucker knows something about Dad’s murder. ”
My chest burns, and I walk away from the three of them, needing a second to myself.
How could I not have seen it? Carver and Kingston were making business deals under my nose.
Kingston’s parents wouldn’t sign off on that.
They’re old school. They want the business to stay in the family.
Even if it’s losing money, they would rather sell off a casino or two than give up half their shares.
Which means Kingston forged the documents and is trying to sell off the business that my girl is supposed to run.
“Cash,” Xander calls as he walks up from behind. “What’s up, man? I’m worried about you.”
I stare off into the distance and take another drag. “I let her go.”
It’s a simple statement. Only four words, yet it feels like a knife to the gut.
“What? Why did you do that?” His eyebrows are pinched as he studies me from the side.
“Because she isn’t responsible for Kingston’s sins.”
When I finally look at him, his jaw is tight.
“She’s not. But you’re in love with her.”
I swallow twice before nodding. “I am. But she left. So it doesn’t matter.”
He’s silent for a second before he sighs. “You’re a dumbass.”
“What?” I snap.
Xander shakes his head and runs his tattooed fingers through his hair. “Did you ask her if she’d like to stay?”
Irritation prickles at the base of my neck, and my bruised knuckles start to throb. “No, I didn’t ask her to stay. We kidnapped her. I told her she was free to go, and she went. Just drop it. I don’t know why you care. You don’t like her anyway.”
I turn to leave, done with this conversation.
“What the hell are you talking about?” Xander spins to face me, his gray-blue eyes darker than usual.
I match his expression, glaring at him. “You haven’t liked her since the second we took her.”
Xander scoffs and looks away, sliding his hands into his pockets. “Liking and trusting are two different things, brother. I like her just fine. It’s the trusting part that I’m struggling with. But that’s more of a me problem, considering I don’t trust any woman.”
Then he walks off and rejoins the others while I process his words. It’s been a year since his last relationship, and she messed him up pretty badly, but maybe it’s worse than I realized. Fuck, now I feel like an asshole.
Should I have asked Jordyn to stay?
Would she have if I had?
Or is she happy that she’s free?
An hour passes, then another one.
While Cassian works to access the camera footage, my brothers and I play poker at one of the shitty card tables we have set up near a wall of windows on the second floor of the warehouse.
Kingston is still being held downstairs, and Cassian has a makeshift office in one of the old offices left over from when this building was an operational manufacturing facility.
None of us has been really talking, which I’m glad about. Kian and Beckett can tell there’s tension between me and Xander. It’s awkward because we rarely have serious disagreements with each other.
“They haven’t located Carver yet,” Beckett announces, reading a message from his phone.
My gut twists because I don’t like this. Not one bit. The shit with Carver isn’t adding up. His family is one of the world’s wealthiest. Why would he agree, other than greed? But by making a deal with Kingston, he would still be sharing power and wealth, so that doesn’t make sense.
“We’ll wait. I have all day for them to bring the lying bastard in.” I lean back in my uncomfortable chair and look down at my cards. A king and a seven of diamonds. My favorite. “Call.” I toss my chips into the pile.
“Kingston is a dead man, either way,” I tell them as Kian deals the flop.
Beckett sits straighter, his casual expression turning dark in a flash. “What did he do to Jordyn?”
I stare at my youngest brother for a second, studying him. That’s the first time I’ve heard him use her real name. This is the side of Beckett we only see every so often. It’s never good when this side of him comes out. Not for the other person, anyway.
“He’s treated her like a doormat all her life. Like she’s not good enough because she’s a woman. He’s kept her hidden in the background, and that’s not where she belongs.” I call the bet and put more chips in then wait for the last turn. When Kian deals it, I inwardly grin.
A full house of kings and sevens.
My phone vibrates, and I pull it from my pocket. As soon as I see Caleb’s name on the screen, my heart starts to pound.
“Yeah?”
“Boss, Jacob Kingston and Elliott Carver just went into Jordyn’s building.”
Every muscle in my body tenses. “Go in after them. We’re on our way.”
My brothers are on my heels as I hurry out of the warehouse. Without any questions, they climb into my car, and I race out of the parking lot toward the freeway.
“Jacob Kingston and Elliott Carver just went into Jordyn’s building,” I shout, driving recklessly, without a second thought. “Get as many of our men over there as quickly as possible.”
Beckett’s already on the phone, barking instructions to his team of specially trained men who we always keep on our payroll. Normally, they’re used to persuade cheaters not to come into our casinos any longer, but sometimes they help with unique situations as well.
“What the fuck are they doing there together?” Kian demands.
It doesn’t make sense. I’m sure Jacob is innocent. Positive. So why is he with Carver?
Arrows keep pointing to that fucker. One after the other.
“Fuck!” Beckett shoves his phone forward to play a video.
I keep one hand on the wheel and glance at the screen, catching a perfect shot of Elliott Carver buying a goddamn burner phone. The same one that texted my father right before he was murdered.
“He killed him. It wasn’t Kingston,” I mutter as I press down harder on the gas. “He tried to set Kingston up because Carver knew we would kill him. So he wouldn’t have to.”
Xander stares at the video playing. “Carver has connections in the city. People who might have access to the cameras along The Strip.”
“Okay, but what about the phone? Did he plant it in Dad’s office? Kian asks.
We all shrug. Anything is possible at this point.
My phone rings a second later, Caleb’s name popping up on the center console screen once again. I immediately accept the call.
“Boss, Jacob is dead.” Caleb is panting heavily.
“Where’s Jordyn?” I roar. “What about Jordyn?”
Please, God, don’t let her be hurt. Fuck. My girl. My baby.
I can’t survive.
I won’t survive without her.
She has my heart in her hands, and if anything happens to her…
