Beckett would know in a second it’s not mine, because it’ll probably be about the beach or some pop star wanna-be.
Looks like I found the first assignment I’ll have to actually do on my own, luckily for me it’s the kind that I just so happen to have a knack for.
* * *
I spentthe rest of the day skipping classes, the mood Rebecca put me in during English having me flip two middle fingers up at my father’s good boy contingencies. I left Saint with a single pill to give her at one o’clock, and used this time to do more digging into potential hideouts for my car, having only a single lead to follow after hours of rummaging through dad’s home office.
I guess something is better than fucking nothing.
I returned to Riverside just in time for Rebecca’s final class to end, which was P.E. swimming. The class has been over for well over ten minutes, but, of course, she continues to work on her sidestroke.
I stay watching her from the far end hallway, leaning against the wall as I breathe in the humidity and scent of chlorine overwhelming the large basement natatorium. Two guys from the swim team make their way over to me soaking wet, goggles still tight around their faces as they laugh quietly between themselves. I don’t need to hear what they’re saying to know exactly what they’re laughing at.
Better yet,whothey’re laughing at.
The glares over their shoulders at Rebecca may just cost them the entire body part. I ignore the two dick bags as they pass me, and dick bags do the same, disappearing inside the boys locker room.
I quickly scout the area, making sure nobody else is around to make her feel uncomfortable.
Besides me, of course.
The only person left besides Rebecca is some chick in a swim cap climbing out of the pool, reaching for a towel to wrap around herself.
Rebecca has her cap thrown onto the edge of the pool, not giving a shit about messing up her hair, once again defying the typical teenage girl persona.
Her body moves like air through the water, all slender limbs and long hair wading across the Olympic sized pool in precise strokes.
She has a way of perfecting everything, the complete opposite of me.
Rebecca is kicking off the wall for another lap when I turn to make my way into the locker room, carefully opening the door.
It’s relatively quiet when I step inside, the only voices in the distance are the same ones who were stupid enough to speak Rebecca’s name without my permission.
I whistle the beat to the song “One, Two, Freddy’s Coming for You” as I pull out my trusty switchblade, striding past the rows of lockers and scraping the sharp end of it along the sides to get their attention.
It works because the room falls deathly silent.
“Who’s there?” One of them asks, but I say nothing, because the fear in his tone already tells me he suspects the answer.
Yet still the guys look surprised as I turn the corner, holding towels tight around their waists to hide their four inch peckers.
The blonde one, I think his name is Joffrey, speaks first through an uncomfortable chuckle. “Oh, what’s up, Shaw? Didn’t hear you come in.”
Precisely the point, needle dick.
I take lazy steps toward him, eye on my blade as I toss it in the air and catch it by the pointy end.
“Heard you guys laughing out there…” I say, still focused on the weapon. “What was so funny?”
“What-why do you wanna know?”
I pin him with a venomous smile. “Maybe I feel like laughing too.”
They look nervously between each other until the other shorter, punier one speaks up. “Just an inside joke, you know?”
I take one final step over to them, the three of us forming a human triangle. “Well, I’m inside now, wouldn’t you say?” My gaze slides to Joffrey, who’s swallowing hard.
“C’mon man, it was just a harmless joke.”
