“He has some points though. She’s fucking smart. She’s getting her PhD and she has all these plans for how she wants to change things in the world, and I just play ball.”
“Like a fucking god. I can’t wait to see you out here on the field man. I hope it’s playing for us. I put in a word or two when I can, but even playing against you. I won’t mind seeing you on the other side of the field if it means you’re out there. Just wish I could have the chance to knock you on your ass.”
We all have a laugh, and I hope I do end up on the field in the same league as him. But I know, especially with my suspension that it’s a rocky road to get there.
“Anyway, look Mac and I have made it work.”
“But you guys graduated at the same time. I’ll be getting drafted; she’ll still be in her PhD program.”
“Don’t worry about all that. Seriously. If you guys love each other, you’ll figure it out.” Mackenzie gives me a pep talk.
“Love? I don’t even know if she fucking likes me.”
“She likes you.” Mackenzie insists.
“Then what do I do?”
“Go there tonight and talk to her. Just tell her the truth. First, tell her that nothing happened between you and that girl. Then tell her that you have feelings for her.”
“And if she doesn’t have feelings?”
“Then that sucks, a lot. But at least you’ll know.”
“Am I pushing too much too soon?”
“I don’t think so. You’ve spent weeks going at her pace, right? If she doesn’t know if she has feelings for you by now…”
“It sucks but at least I’ll know.”
“Right.”
“And let’s be honest, it’s not like you’re hurting for backup options, bro,” Waylon offers.
“Like you would have taken back up options on Mac?” I ask, a little annoyed, because the idea of anyone but Violet leaves me feeling hollow.
“Fair point. Sorry,” he apologizes.
“Sorry. Not trying to be a dick. I’m just…”
“Strung out on a girl?” Mackenzie tries to conceal her amusement but fails.
“I’m glad someone’s enjoying this.”
“I am, but only because I think it’ll turn out okay for you. And I’m excited to meet her. I’m so sure, I’m going to make the dinner reservations for four, so you can bring her.”
“I think that’s a little presumptuous.”
“Let me have my fun.”
“Seriously, let this girl have it, or we’ll never hear the end of it,” Waylon chimes in.
“Fine. Text me when you know.”
“Will do.”
“Love you man. Go get’er.”
“Love you guys. Bye.”
