Page 22 of Revealing Mark
“You’re okay.” She sounded relieved to hear my voice
“Yeah.”
“When you didn’t call, I was so worried,” she babbled on.
“You didn’t call Matt, did you?” I asked anxiously, realizing I hadn’t called her back like I said I would.
“No. I would have if I hadn’t been able to get a hold of you.” She sighed. “Besides I don’t want to be the one in the firing line when he finds out. Did you get your stuff?”
I was aware I was being observed by Mark so I lowered my voice although it was childish because he could hear everything I said anyway. “Yes.”
“Thank goodness. At least you’ve managed to sort everything out.”
“Kinda,” I mumbled under my breath, very aware of the extra pair of ears listening in on our conversation.
“What does that mean?” Her curiosity was piqued.
“It’s complicated.” I didn’t want to explain more with Mark around.
“Did you get the keys?” she persisted.
“I can’t really explain now. Can I call you tomorrow and we can talk?” I gave Mark a side-glance but his focus was on driving.
“You sure everything’s okay?”
“Yes. I’ll tell you everything tomorrow.”
“Okay. Love you.”
“Ditto.”
I ended the call and shoved it in my purse before going back to the silent treatment. He could make me do what he wanted but I didn’t have to like it.
“Sophie?” he asked. I pressed my lips together, refusing to answer.
“She knew,” he stated when the silence continued.
I made a point of looking out the window as I crossed my arms. I wouldn’t allow him to draw my sister into this. If Matthew discovered she knew and hadn’t said anything, she be in as much trouble as I was.
Mark’s apartment block was sleek and modern, soulless—like a piece of steel.
I had never been to his apartment before. I had copied his address from my mother’s address book. There was no reason for me to have done so, but it had been something I hadn’t been able to resist doing.
I refused to get out of the car until he came around and opened the door. He waited expectantly. I reluctantly got out and he got some of my stuff out of the trunk, but I refused to help. I was here against my will and I wasn’t going to be nice about it.
“Stop sulking, Tracy, it isn’t a good look,” he murmured before greeting the doorman to his building.
Who on earth had a doorman in their building? I had always known security paid well but this type of wealth was another level. I was itching to ask him questions about it but then I remembered I wasn’t talking to him. I did however greet his friendly doorman.
The inside of his apartment matched the outside, sleek and modern with minimal furniture. Where my apartment was cluttered with endless ornaments, there was no clutter in his apartment. And apartment wasn’t the word to describe the size of the space he lived in. It was massive compared to my tiny apartment.
I wanted to comment but I wasn’t going to break my silence.
He set my stuff down in the living room.
“You can use this room while you stay here,” he said, leading me down the hall to a room that was bright with cream linen.
It was beautiful. My breath caught in my throat as I wandered over to the window and touched the fabric of the curtain. It was soft.
