“My rational mind knows that,” I mutter. “But…” My voice trails off. I have no idea how to explain it to him, but Remy just nods.
“Yes,” he says softly. “I understand.” For a while, it’s silent between us before he clears his throat. “Thank you for sharing that with me,” he says. “Thank you for your trust.”
I want to tell him that he can trust me, too, and that whenever he is ready, I am here to listen, but I don’t know how to say the words without making it sound like I am pressuring him.
“Dad was a terrible man,” he suddenly says, cringing visibly. He is silent again. “Fuck,” he curses. “You just shared something so private with me, and I can’t. Like some pathetic douchebag.”
I take his hand. “You don’t need to share anything just because I did. I chose to tell you of my own accord. Besides,” I pause, “there are still things I can’t talk about yet. So, it’s not just you.”
“I just don’t want you to feel like I am taking advantage of you or that you are giving so much more than I do.”
“That’s impossible,” I promise.
We smile at each other, and something about the way he looks at me makes me completely giddy in the silliest way possible. It feels like my heart hurts just looking at him because all I want is him. When he secretly kisses me goodnight, he has his hand atthe back of my head, crushing my lips in a way that sends tingles all over my body. I have barely room to move, because Remy dominates me in a way he hasn’t done before, and I can only lean into the kiss, because… fuck, it’s hot!
Before we part, he leans his forehead against mine. “With you, the world is less dark,” he tells me. “And my life is much more hopeful. I was impossibly lucky that the goddess sent you my way.”
Chapter thirty
Dinner Drama
*KAT*
Ihave been swooning ever since my last date with Remy. I think opening up to him, at least partly, made us so much closer. I have never told anyone about my parents. I have always felt that wall inside of me, the barrier that prevented me from telling anyone, even Ayden.
Or my brothers.
I know Joel and Eve would listen to me, and they would always believe me, but I just can’t bring myself to tell them.
Somehow, with Remy, I felt ready to open up a little.
Goddess, and then he was so romantic!
When I told Ayden what Remy said, he basically dragged me to the pack doctor and told me to get on to any form of birthcontrol, just to be safe, in case we don’t have a condom at hand. “You are going to get laid soon,” he said, completely convinced.
There is no reasoning with him when he has set his mind on something, so I just did as he told me, and secretly agreed that it’s better to be prepared.
“Kata?” Eve calls to me when I return. I told him I was just going for a swift check-up. There is no way I would overshare that much with my brothers – and certainly not about Remy. “Do you have a moment to help?”
“Sure,” I say, following his voice into the kitchen. I pause, staring at Eve and the many ingredients, jaw-slackened. “What are you doing?”
“I am preparing tonight’s dinner,” he says. “Did you forget that Gabriel, Remy and Sean are coming?”
“How could I forget that?” I mutter, after all, it’s been on my mind for days. “I just didn’t believe you would go that insane with dinner.”
“They are a very prestigious household,” Eve says, sounding unusually nervous. “I want to deliver.”
“Eve, you are a great cook. There is no need to prove anything.”
“It’s important, Kata,” he sighs. “Sean is both an important business partner and ally for Joel. This is not just a simple invitation.”
This conjures thoughts of Remy and how much he actually enjoys the simpler things. Maybe Gabriel and Sean aren’t too different. Maybe it’s just our perception of them, and that they would happily enjoy a more relaxed barbecue evening?
But then, Gabriel does look kind of stiff, and Sean is probably the most serious person I have seen. Eve’s approach is the safest.
“We should have just gone to a restaurant,” I mutter.
“Yeah, I thought the same yesterday when I made my grocery list.” He winces. “I got really carried away by Joel’s enthusiasm. But you were right, we completely railroaded the brothers. Now we can only make the best out of it.”
