Ares sat on my lap and my hand tightly wrapped around him as I struggled to find the right words.
How did one ask for fake documents?
“So what can I help you with, ladies?” Nico asked casually.
The sharpness of his eyes didn’t escape me. Neither did the tension in his shoulders. Could we trust him? I didn’t think we had a choice.
“Umm, we heard that you can”—I searched for a diplomatically correct word—“help us. We need help.”
I swallowed.
“With?” Nico clipped.
God, why couldn’t he make this easier on us? Maybe he could recite the services he offered. Like in the movies.
I could feel Billie’s eyes darting between Morrelli and me. I shifted in my seat uncomfortably. Something wasn’t right, but I couldn’t pinpoint what. Maybe it was my sixth sense warning me.
Or maybe I was being paranoid.
With a shuddering breath, I jumped to my feet, Ares sliding to his. Billie followed my movement.
“I’m sorry.” I gulped. “This was a mistake.”
Without another word, I picked up my son and tugged Billie out of the mobster’s office.
Maybe everything wasn’t lost just yet.
Chapter27
Byron
Ibarely managed to keep my focus all morning.
It had been almost two weeks since I’d seen her and my body still burned. I managed to hack into Odette’s phone. It was a burner and she kept little information on it. A few photos. Barely any contacts. And her note.
To contact Nico Morrelli for fake identification.
That was my ticket. I had a plan. A good one. Once she said those words—made that request—I’d have her. It was a federal offense. I even lined up a buddy of mine who’d bust into Nico’s office and bring her to me.
The trap was perfect. I would have two things to hold over her. The diamond smuggler interaction and federal offense. Plan A and Plan B. She’d finally be mine.
Winston paced around my office frantically. He’d been on edge ever since learning about his son. The odd part, we couldn’t find any trace of Billie giving birth. No trace of the boy. Although I did learn one thing my brother never shared with me. The most peculiar connection between him and Billie Swan.
I flicked a look at my brother. He’d changed over the last six years. Gave up the booze and drugs. Was it all for Billie Swan?
I shook my head. It turned out we both fucked up in some way six years ago.
None of the wealth, fame, or power could keep the Swan women with us. God, I fucking missed Odette. The thought of seeing her again clawed at my chest. My body had yet to cool down. The memories came back with a vengeance—of her writhing beneath me, her mouth wrapped around my cock, the feel of her soft skin under my fingertips.
My phone vibrated, dancing across the table.
“Morrelli.” I hit the speaker button, my shoulders tensing. I’d been itching to dial him up all fucking day. It was fucking two in the afternoon. Agony.
“Dr. Swan and her sister left,” he said, leaving it at that.
“And?”
“They were here for barely a few minutes. Whatever they were going to ask, they changed their minds.”
