“It’s high,” he stated flatly. My brows furrowed as I met his aquamarine gaze. “Higher than usual,” he added. The intensity in his eyes was wrong—on so many levels—but my body didn’t care. It demandedhim. Jesus, I’d lose my medical license before I even got it.
“Does your temperature usually run higher than normal?” I asked curiously.
“No, not unless I’m angry or—” He paused and I raised my eyebrow, waiting. “Or having sex.”
My mouth parted in shock as I imagined this specimen having sex. Good Lord. My imagination took hold and hot images played in my mind. The way his muscles would bulge as he thrust—
I shook my head, scolding my promiscuous thoughts, and brought the thermometer to his mouth.
“Open.” I leaned in, willing my hands to steady, and placed the thermometer under his tongue. “Close.”
He clamped his teeth together.Beep.Beep. There was a beep, an interval, and one last beep.
“One oh three,” I stated. “It’s high. Let me get you a glass of water and some Motrin. The doctor should be with you soon.”
I headed to the little storage drawer where Father kept water bottles. Then I turned to the cabinet and pulled out a mini-package of Motrin. I made my way to him, his legs in all their manspreading glory. I stopped a foot away from him, fighting the urge to step between them.
“What’s your name?” he asked as I extended my palm out, handing him the two little pills.
“Nurse Betty,” I answered with a touch of snark.
He frowned and shook his head as if he didn’t care. He took the pills, put them on his tongue, and reached for the bottled water I’d forgotten to offer him.
Our fingers brushed. A fleeting touch, but it burned like the fires of hell. I yanked my hand back, meeting his puzzled look. Didn’t he feel this? It literally charged the air with so much electricity I was certain the entire room buzzed with it.
He unscrewed the top to the bottle and then downed the water while I watched his Adam’s apple move with each swallow, mesmerized. Even the seemingly innocent movement was sexy as hell on this man.
My eyes found his, and again like a fool, I let myself drown in them. The air around me buzzed, sending a tingling sensation over my arms and across my chest. I shook my head, attempting to clear the fog.
The door swung open, and both of us glanced over to find the doctor. My gaze flicked to the patient to find his eyes already on me. A shadow of what looked like disappointment crossed his face before it disappeared as quickly as it came. We tore our eyes away from each other and regret washed over me. The tension was just starting to build between us and there was something intoxicating about it.
Unlike this enigma of a man, I wasn’t as good at hiding my emotions, but I forced myself to switch into professional mode.
After all, the doctor was my father.
Chapter2
Byron
The girl was barely legal.
But there was something about her that was appealing. I just couldn’t put my finger on it. Her hair was red—strawberry blonde with more red than blonde. Her eyes were a mixture of green, brown, and gold—the most unique shade of hazel I’d ever seen. They were fascinating. The kind you could get lost in.
She seemed the type of woman who would be sweet and innocent, but wouldn’t take anyone’s shit. My weakness. I liked them with a backbone. Add in a mouth and brain on them, and I was sold. A doormat made my dick limp within a millisecond of attempting conversation.
Each time she met my gaze in wonderment, her mouth would part and her cheeks flushed. The bad part was… I felt it too. And it was the last thing I needed right now.
Especially with the screaming theatrics I just got from my last mistake. It was the reason I was snappy when I first came in. That fucking woman slipped a sleeping pill into my scotch and caused me to pass out on the deck. I should have known that telling her the two of us would never marry despite what our fathers wanted wouldn’t go over well. Nicki was a spoiled brat that wanted whatever she couldn’t have. I still remembered the fit she threw when her father gifted her the wrong color car for her sixteenth birthday.
Needless to say, Nicki didn’t take my honesty well. Although I’d never understand what she thought she’d accomplish by drugging me. It didn’t matter. She was history.
I didn’t need more drama in my life.
Women were a headache I really didn’t need. Even when the rules were clearly stated upfront. They always seemed to forget them. After a week or two, they’d begin to think I’d get down on one knee and propose.
Would it be the same with this one? Somehow, I didn’t think so.
Our gazes locked, those golden specks shimmering yellow. She closed her eyes and shook her head. This forceful attraction between us, drawing us to each other, was so strong I could almost taste it. Except, it made no fucking sense. She was way too young—at least a decade younger than me.
