JOHNNY

It had been three months since Sawyer became my Daddy, but the newness of it hadn't faded at all. It was like I was living inside a surprise party. The kind of surprise party with all my favorite stuffies and toys and bubbles.

But Sawyer was being weird. I could tell something was up but I didn’t let myself panic. I trusted Daddy to have my best interest at heart so even as Sawyer drove me to the indoor skydiving place, I just focused on how much fun I was gonna have.

And the best part was that Daddy finally agreed to try it with me. I’d come to terms with the fact that he wasn’t a risk taker, and I appreciated that about him. Yin and yang, right. If we were both wild, we’d probably die on our first date. But he kept me in check and I still had all the dopamine I needed just from being with him.

When he was putting on his flight suit, Daddy pretended to be all grumpy about it. "Don't get used to seeing me in costumes, sweetheart." He sniffed the inside of the helmet and grimaced.

"It goes over your head, Daddy." I giggled and slipped mine on. "Not your nose."

He smirked but finished getting suited up. I could barely handle my own excitement over getting to share something I loved with him. Even if this was the only time he did it, at least he would be able to appreciate the feeling of freefall. So cool!

"Are you nervous?" I asked for the hundredth time, tugging on his jumpsuit. "You're nervous. I can tell. But you’re gonna do it anyway, right? You’re not gonna back out?"

"I'm fine, Johnny." He flashed a smile that didn't quite cover the 'oh shit' in his eyes. “And I’ve already updated my will so you’ll be taken care of if I die.”

"Okay, boomer, you’re not gonna die. And I’m pretty sure you're gonna love it." At least I hoped he did. Then maybe I could work my way into parasailing in Hawaii. We were going on a trip in June and I really wanted to fly above the ocean and look down at the water for sharks.

He acted like I was annoying, but the corners of his mouth kept twitching upwards. He loved my brattiness whether he admitted it or not. Which he never did.

I went first and showed off some of my best moves. I darted up to the top of the tunnel and then somersaulted my way back down. It was epic.

Sawyer held his phone up to record me but I knew he was probably holding his breath with every drop and spin I took.

When he finally got in, I set the phone on a tripod to record because I was too excited to sit still. I just couldn’t do it. My poor Daddy was like a cardboard cutout of himself, completely stiff arms and legs. But once the instructor adjusted him, he relaxed into it and was able to float. It was incredible.

He'd never admit it, but I knew he liked it too.

When he got out, I threw myself into his arms as happiness exploded out of me. "You were so awesome! I knew you would be." I squealed as I jumped around him. "Thank you for being brave."

Sawyer was awkward with compliments, like he wasn't sure if I was teasing him. Then he ruffled my hair and cleared his throat. "That wasn't the brave part."

I was confused as I stood there waiting for him to explain, but then he dropped to one knee.

For a split second, my brain didn't compute. My Daddy was right there in the middle of the viewing area, kneeling with a nervous smile on his gorgeous face. All I could do was blink as the moment caught up to me.

When he reached into his pocket and pulled out a ring, my heart almost flip-flopped right out of my chest. Then he said the words I’d fantasized about since I first met him. "Jonathan Sutter, will you marry me?"

I might have screamed. “Yes!” I dropped to my knees too and threw myself at him. “Yes, yes, yes!!!

He laughed and held me against his cheek. “Thank fuck!”

I pulled the ring out of the little box and inspected it. “Is this silicone?"

Sawyer chuckled and nodded. "It's safer for when my little daredevil does things like this." He waved a hand toward the tunnel. “If it gets caught, the ring will come off…not your finger.”

"I love it." I fell against him and we both ended up on the ground with a small audience of people clapping for us. “And I can’t wait to be your husband.”

He slipped the ring onto my finger, and it felt weird and wonderful and perfect.

"I love you." I kissed him right there. Soft and slow and exactly how I liked it.

Sawyer’s face was so open and happy it nearly made me cry. "I love you too, Johnny."

We sat there for a minute with my heart running laps, and Sawyer just breathing me in like he was the lucky one. We had to agree to disagree on that one a long time ago.

I peeked up at him and bit my lip as a question popped out before I could stop it. "Why do you want to marry me?"

He laughed a real, deep laugh that I felt all the way down to my toes. "Because you make me want to try everything." He stood up and pulled me with him. "You make me want to be your Daddy forever."

Tears started dripping down my cheeks, and I was helpless against them. I buried my face in his neck and hoped he didn’t mind his fiancé being such a baby in public. “I want that too, Daddy.”

Sawyer held me tight, whispering all the things I needed to hear as we changed and left the facility.

"This means I get to tell everyone, right?" I was bouncing again as we walked back to the car.

"Everyone." He said it like he knew there was no stopping me.

I clambered into the Range Rover, already planning our engagement party and what kind of cake we should get and who would cry first when we announced it. Probably me. Definitely me.

Sawyer was amused as I babbled ideas and made a list on my phone and then accidentally called my mom and cried all over again when I told her. She might not have fully understood what I was saying, but I was happy to share the news either way.

"Who knew you would make my life so exciting without needing to keep a first aid kit on hand?”

Daddy reached for my hand and gave it a squeeze. “If this is all it takes to keep you from bleeding, I’ll marry you every year.”

I didn’t need a wedding every year. Daddy knew how to keep me happy and make me feel loved. And I knew that would last until he took his last breath in a hundred years. “Not necessary, but I’ve heard about an awesome helicopter flight you can take over the volcanoes in Iceland…”
