A Lesson

Charon let go of my hand

and I let it fall to my side,

refusing to break his gaze.

Close now, I saw that he

was not as old as I thought.

But then Gods do not age like mortals.

He could have been twenty,

or centuries old, and I would be

none the wiser. He said gently,

‘You must see this differently, child.

For you are one of the fortunate ones.

I know it is unusual to be without purpose.

But clearly Chaos,

mother to all us divine beings,

trusts you so well that you

are destined to build your own

path in this realm and the next.

You will learn who you are.

Rely on no parent or God-King

for your eternal gifts.

This is a blessing too, if you see it.’
