Page 228 of Hekate: The Witch (Goddesses of the Underworld #1)

The Door Opened

and I found myself face to face with Styx.

I know that Gods do not age,

but a pang rose in my chest

at how she looked,

exactly the same

as the day we fought.

Styx stepped back

when she saw me.

‘Hekate.’

It wasn’t said with surprise

or with anger.

My name sounded like a spell

when she said it that way.

I waited for permission to enter,

and with a nod she gave it to me.

I followed her to a hall split in half

by her own river.

Around me the fine things

that were expected in Gods’ houses glowed.

A golden fireplace. Emerald urns.

Thrones crafted from the finest oak.

She snapped her fingers

and a small silver chalice

of sweet wine was in my hand.
