The Thing on the Drawbridge

It was standing in the middle

of the drawbridge.

Initially I thought it was a mortal spirit

lost, seeking some kind of path

but the pale, white, naked form

gave me pause. Its arms were

too long and its legs too long,

and then it turned…

and it had no face.

I froze, my blood cold

with a fear I had never felt before.

And then… it began to run towards me.

I panicked and tried to turn

and run but the thing was

shaking the bridge too much

and though I held the sides

of the ropes and tried to keep

my balance, I slipped and fell

through the cracks in the drawbridge

and as the river raced beneath me

and I watched in horror

as the thing drew nearer and nearer,

I tried my best to pull myself up

and just as my hand slipped—
