Skylar – Four Days Later
I wince and quickly freeze as the soup sloshes in the bowl while walking up the stairs, and I bite my lip, hoping it doesn’t spill.
Mama has been out of the hospital for two days, the doctors only keeping her for a further two after she woke up, and I haven’t left her side, meaning right now, not only am I on club property, but I’m inside Mama’s and Brick’s home, the house Blade grew up in.
It’s weird because I feel at home here, and I don’t really know what to make of those feelings.
There are pictures of me on the walls, something I was originally mad at until Blade admitted Mama told Brick where the photos she had hidden of me growing up were and demanded he put them up, knowing I wouldn’t leave her side and that he wouldn’t allow her to stay at the apartment.
Something he was shocked to learn Mama bought for me.
I honestly thought he’d resent her for having a relationship with me when I didn’t want one with him, but it turns out he’s grateful.
Who knew, huh?
Shaking my head, I slowly climb the stairs, my eyes on the soup, glass of water, and orange juice, and continue my way to Mama, wishing Nyx was still here to help break the ice with Brick.
Since I’ve been staying here in the guest room, so have Nyx and Tate, and they’ve barely left me until today. Nyx said it was time for Tate to return to a normal life, meaning preschool, something I was hesitant about, but Mama helped me understand it was needed.
She’s gone through a traumatic experience and still flinches when she sees a brothers cut.
“Okay, Mama, I have your soup,” I announce as I walk into the large, light main bedroom.
Mama sighs, “Sweet pea, I could have gotten that myself.”
Brick grins from where he’s sat at her bedside as I shake my head and bring the tray over, placing it on the table.
Mama isn’t one to be waited on hand and foot, and the fact that she’s bedbound for the next week ticks her off even more.
“Mama, you need to rest and heal,” Blade says from the couch where he’s spent most of his time, refusing to leave her.
“And you need to get back to the garage and to the clubhouse. You can’t expect Psycho to keep holding down the fort,” she replies as she tries to sit up but winces at her movement, and I scold, “Mama!”
She waves her hand at me, making me roll my eyes as Brick smiles at our relationship while Blade states, “I held down the fort while he was in a coma. It’s only fair…” and I laugh. I can’t help it.
It’s not like the man wanted to be in a coma for four months and then lose five years of his memories.
“Leo!” Mama snaps and my laughter doubles, but it soon stops when Mama scolds me, “And when was the last time you went to the office, missy?” and my mouth hangs open as she raises a brow and demands, “Well, when?”
I clear my throat, side-eyeing Blade, who grins wide, clearly liking the scolding being directed at me instead of him, and I gently rub my hip with my middle finger, making him laugh, and I admit to Mama, “Before Tate was taken.”
She sighs, “Skylar,” and I retort, “Mama….”
“Less of the lip!” she snaps making me flinch.
Damn that tone never gets easy from her.
Brick smirks and mutters, “Oh yeah, she definitely brought you up giving you that mama glare she has going on,” making Mama smile before she says, “You can’t shake your responsibilities,” she looks at Blade, “the pair of you. I’m okay, and besides, your father will see to it that I don’t lift a finger. ”
“Mama, you’re more important than the club,” Blade states, and I nod in agreement because, yes, that is true and it is about damn time he realized that.
Before I can open my mouth and declare she’s more important than everything, she points at me and states, “Angel’s Kids and Angel’s accountants are more important than me, so don’t even try it,” and I scowl as I sit on the chair near her bed.
“Wait Angel’s Kids?” Brick says with shock, and I swallow.
I promised to get to know him for Mama, but I haven’t really kept to that promise, and by the raised brow she’s currently giving me, she’s noticed.
I haven’t said more than two words to him, whereas with Blade, I’ve made an effort, and Nyx was right.
He does make a pretty good friend, though it has only been four days, and things could change.
“Mama helped me build the organization,” I admit, “I love numbers, but I also wanted to help kids that were put in my position with Melissa, so Mama made it so I had the best of both worlds. She ran Angel’s Kids while I went to school full time before helping me get my office,” I smile slightly, “She’s been my biggest cheerleader. ”
“You were never my biggest cheerleader,” Blade complains with a pout, and I grin while Mama rolls her eyes and says, “You didn’t need me to be. You had a whole club behind you, your sister had no one, so get over it.”
“Feeling the love, Mama,” he replies, and I laugh before making eye contact with Brick, who tilts his head, and I swallow hard at the look he’s currently giving me.
“I’m proud of you,” he says, “I know I don’t have a right to feel it, but I do. I am so proud of you and grateful you had Anna.”
I smile softly at him for the first time and whisper, “Thank you,” and he grins before the door to the room opens and slams shut, making us all look.
I frown, seeing an out-of-breath Nyx leaning against the door, but he ignores me for a moment, something I am so going to hit him for later, and states to Blade, “Old man Trivers’ car is back in the garage!”
I openly laugh, causing him to glare at me while Blade groans, “Goddamn it…” then says to Mama, “I’m staying here,” and she laughs with me while Brick looks down, his shoulders shaking.
“I saw Randy push it into the garage, and I made a run for it,” Nyx admits, breathing heavily.
I shake my head and ask, “I thought you were just taking Tate to preschool and then coming back? You’ve been nearly three hours.”
Nyx looks at me, his green eyes locking me in as he smiles innocently and admits, “I was packing up your apartment. The prospects are currently unpacking everything at our home.”
Mama cackles louder, making me glare at her before she winces and holds her side at the force of her cackle and I roll my eyes while Brick quickly stands. Mock glaring at her though you can’t miss the small smile appearing on his lips, a smile I’ve realized I’ve inherited.
“You did not move me in without my okay, Nyx!” I snap, and he grins wide, crossing his arms over his chest that may grab my attention for a moment.
It’s been a minute since he’s touched me before my eyes go to the tattoo on his neck, my name in bold writing before they linger on the tattoo on his arm, Tate’s name but I frown seeing a date and a number with angel wings underneath Tate’s name that wasn’t there yesterday.
“You love me, right?” he says, gaining my attention, and I nod, “And you want to spend the rest of your life with me, be a mother to Tate, and possibly grow our family?”
I roll my eyes as I stand and say, “You know I do,” and he nods as I walk over to him, and he says, “Then I’m not sorry for speeding up the process of you living together as a family.
I know you said you needed time to come to terms with living near Brick and Blade but with Mama Lopez being here and you trying for her, I thought you being near was the better option for everyone. ”
“You know I hate it when you do something wrong but say the right things to get out of shit,” I mutter, my eyes on his arm.
“I know, but I’m willing to do anything to have you with me, precious. I need you like I need air to breathe.” He admits, and I can’t even melt with his words because the tattoo has my whole focus.
A phone rings, and Blade curses, “Fuck, it’s Randy,” making Mama chuckle again while Brick says, “Hey, Fury, did you know Sky and Anna are the owners of Angel’s Kids, the organization the club is getting involved with in helping under privileged kids?”
Nyx replies, “Yeah, I knew, and I was shocked as fuck when I found out as well before this one forgave me.”
Tears brim my eyes as I gently trace the date on his arm before the number eight in the middle of his wings, and he gently cups my cheeks, forcing me to look at him, and my tears spill over.
“Precious,” he whispers, and I shake my head with a small sob and choke, “I love you,” before wrapping my arms around his waist and holding him tightly, my head on his hard chest, and he wraps his arms around my waist.
“Sweet pea?” Mama says with concern, and I cry, “He got the date we made our baby tattooed on his arm with the number eight in between angel wings.”
“You were pregnant?” Blade asks with tension, and Nyx answers, “She was, and she lost it the day I told her about Tate and the order.”
“ Fuck ...” Blade curses, realizing what caused me to lose it or contribute to the loss, and I squeeze Nyx tighter as he whispers, “Our baby will never be forgotten, precious,” and I nod.
“I love you, Nyx, so much,” I sniffle, and he cups the back of my head, replying, “I love you too,” just as his phone rings and he groans, this time making me giggle as I pull back.
He shakes his head and cups my cheeks, gently wiping away my tears, and he says, “I better go and give Randy a hand.”
I nod and remind him, “You need to convince him to stay.”
He snorts, “Fat chance with how many times Viper has gone to annoy the poor man.”
I hum and press up on my tip toes before pressing my lips against his, my whole body lightening up, and he pulls back first, smiling.
“I won’t be long,” he promises, and I nod as he looks at Blade and demands, “Watch her,” he nods as well before Nyx kisses my head, muttering, “I love you,” then turns and leaves and I bite my bottom lip.
“You’ve forgiven him, haven’t you? I mean fully,” Mama says, the smile in her voice evident, and I nod.
“I think I have for a while. I was just scared he was going to hurt me again,” I admit as I turn to face her, and I nod to her food and demand, “Eat!”
She nods, and I take a seat on the spare chair next to Brick, who tilts his head and asks, “Can you tell me about the organization?”
I can’t help the smile that overtakes my face, and Blade moves closer.
I begin to explain the process of everything, letting the excitement take over, all while Mama eats and adds in what she helped with, which is basically everything while I receive several messages from Nyx complaining about the Chevrolet, which only makes Blade laugh.
Maybe Nyx was right. Everything will be okay, and I’ll finally get the family I’ve always wanted.
