Skylar

“I need you to breathe for me, sweet pea,” Mama demands softly as she cups my cheeks, but I shake my head and cry, “I never should have run out of the club.”

I knew the scene before me didn’t look right, I felt it deep down in my gut, but I panicked at the pain that overtook me seeing her lips on him. I’d never felt that kind of pain before, and in my head, I thought if I ran, I’d never have to feel it again, even if I knew it was crap.

Nyx is my person, just like I’m his.

As soon as I got to Mama’s motel, she calmed me like I knew she would.

She helped me see past the hurt and focus on the fact that not only would Nyx never hurt me that way and that he’s proved that over the past five years but that I also left him when he was most likely being assaulted, taking the situation out of context just like Brick did with Mama.

Like father like daughter, huh?

“You didn’t know Sky,” she tries.

I sniffle and choke, “I did exactly what Brick did to you. He said it himself, she had him drugged, and I saw what I wanted to see, and now, because I didn’t stick around, Tate is missing.”

Mama grips my jaw and states firmly, “You are nothing like Brick, not in this situation. As soon as I opened the door, your first words were, ‘I think I made a mistake’. You knew what you saw wasn’t as it seemed, and you felt guilty, but you knew you needed the night to decompress.”

“Tate…” I sob, guilt and terror running through me.

She’ll hurt her, Lacey will hurt her like Melissa hurt me.

“Will be found safe and in one piece. Fury will not accept anything less,” Mama insists, and I nod before I lay my head on her shoulder, and she wraps her arms around me tightly.

My tears fall as I close my eyes, and she whispers, “Let me take you to the clubhouse, sweet pea. He needs you.”

I don’t think. Instead, I nod and pull back, but before I stand up off the tatty bed, my phone beeps and I quickly grab it, hoping it is Nyx and that they’ve found her, but my blood runs cold reading the words on my screen.

Unknown: Warehouse four, docks east side, come alone, or she’s dead!

A photo of Tate passed out on the floor in her vest and panties is beneath the message, and Mama swears, “She’s dead, I’m killing the bitch never mind Fury!”

I nod in agreement as I stand.

It’s a trap. I know it, and Mama knows it. Lacey most likely wants to get rid of the one person standing in her way of getting a man she believes is hers —a man she tried to trap — but I don’t care, and neither does Mama, as she grabs her keys and phone.

Lacey messed with the wrong woman, and by taking Tate, she’s signed her death warrant.

I quickly rush over to the driver's side of my car, and Mama climbs into the passenger side as she says, “Brick, Warehouse four at the east side docks, the dummy one you use, that is where she’s keeping Tate.”

I start my car as I hear, “Are you sure, baby?”

Mama replies, “I’m sure Lacey messaged Sky a photo of Tate and the address, demanding she go alone.”

“Fuck, it’s a trap,” I hear Blade curse as I pull out of the motel parking lot while Brick snaps, “Don’t you fucking dare go, Anna. You let us handle it!”

I smirk. He can’t stop her, just like he can’t stop me. We’re closer than they are.

“Skylar walks into that building, Cole, then I’ll be following, just hurry…” Mama replies before she hangs up and demands, “Floor it, sweet pea. I am not having those men kill her. She’s mine.”

I nod and mumble, “Very bloodthirsty, Mama,” as I press my foot on the gas before buildings flash beside us in a blur, my mind focusing on one thing – to get my daughter back.

“Seriously, she says come alone, yet she has no one on the door and no cameras to alert her of my presence,” I mutter as I walk over to the large gray door, and Mama snorts.

I shake my head and open the door without care but pause at the scene before me….

“She, uh, demanded we come here, right?” I confirm, “Like right now?”

Mama sighs, “Once a whore, always a whore.”

Shaking my head, I ignore Lacey bent over a crate being rammed into by a guy with a head of curly ginger hair, their moans echoing in the room before I notice Tate laying in the middle of the room passed out, and anger takes over, but my blood turns cold as I hear, “Can you get yourself off later, they should be here soon.”

“She owes me a fuck, that was my payment. Us prospects can’t fuck the whores while prospecting and I’m fucking horny,” the guy moans and I scrunch my nose up in distaste.

Mama snorts, “Well, what a shitty payment for stealing a child, huh, Bently, because I can guarantee you’ve signed your death warrant.”

The guy, Bently, freezes while Lacey gasps, looking our way, but my eyes stay on Melissa, who swallows hard, the knife in her hand shaking.

“Kidnapping children now, Melissa,” I say, and I watch as sweat builds on her forehead.

What’s the over-under she’s going through withdrawals?

“I-I, I need the money,” she stammers, and my jaw ticks.

“You needed the money so badly, you kidnapped a four-year-old little girl?” I confirm, and she nods once. I ask, “And how did you plan to get around the whole club wanting your head because you know without a doubt they are one hundred percent scarier than the Hyenas.”

She chews her chapped bottom lip before admitting, “I was going to run once you gave me a hundred grand so I could start a new life. You failed me. You didn’t get me the patch I needed, so this is the least you could do, and I know how much that little girl means to you.”

My nostrils flare before Mama growls as she storms past me and tackles an unsuspecting Melissa, both of them falling to the floor, the knife sliding across it and I grin as Melissa bangs her head hard on the concrete floor before Mama punches her, once, twice, three times.

She’s been waiting years to do that….

My eyes go to Tate again, and without thinking of the danger, I rush forward toward her, needing to get her out of here.

I get past Mama, who spits on an unconscious Melissa as she climbs off her before a screech echoes, and I turn in time to see a half-naked Lacey rushing towards me, a knife in her hand, and my eyes widen before I brace myself, knowing I won’t have time to dodge her.

“No!” I hear Mama shout, and everything slows down as Mama, who was climbing off Melissa, stands between me and Lacey.

“Mama!” I scream, watching as Lacey’s eyes widen and the knife disappears…
