"Hey," he said softly.

My heart nearly burst in my chest, my head going woozy.

"Hey," I whispered back.

"You ready for bed?" he asked.

"What about the movie?"

"It's over," he said.

I hadn't even noticed the credits were already rolling.

"Do you meansleepingin bed, or the other kind of bed?" I asked.

"You're insatiable," he said. "Give me some time to recover."

"Sleeping it is," I said.

Mason headed to the bedroom while I went for the bathroom to brush my teeth first.

Mason made me feel things I'd never felt before. Not even with David. I had to wonder if that was a terrible way to think. I wasn't comparing the two.

But there was something about Mason. Something about him that had burrowed deep inside my heart. Maybe it was because I was older now. Wiser, more mature. I'd known David since we were kids, and he'd passed away before we'd really had a chance to become adults.

With Mason, it was different.

I stared at myself in the bathroom mirror, waiting for the too-familiar guilt to kick in, but it didn't. I only felt the warmth and comfort of Mason's presence.

A door slammed closed hard, nearly shaking the apartment. Loud, annoying neighbors.

"Your turn," I called out to Mason. "There's an extra toothbrush under the sink."

No reply.

I peeked my head out of the bathroom door.

"Mason?" I called out. "Bathroom's yours."

There was only silence.

Had he already fallen asleep?

I made my way to my bedroom and pushed open the door.

My heart froze, turning to ice.

I'd forgotten.

I'd forgotten I'd been in the middle of cleaning out the closet. Trying to decide what to do with all my stuff.

Everything was out there for the world to see, spread out on an end table at the foot of the bed.
