Her body, at this time, was like a parched paddy field, desperately in need of replenishment.
Fortunately, this was a remote mountainous area, where the Spiritual Energy in the plants was relatively dense, allowing her to draw Spiritual Energy from the air to fill her dried-out energy reserves.
Under the moonlight, among the mottled tree shadows, everyone was either leaning against tree trunks, lying flat on the weeds, or curled up sitting, leaning against each other in sleep.
The usually handsome faces were now weary and dust-covered, with dark circles under their eyes that became even more apparent in the moonlight.
Forty minutes later, Gu Xiaoxi felt that her Physical Strength had recovered a lot.
With a wave of her hand, she took out some Fruit of Immortality from within her body.
The fruits, the size of longan, emitted a pearly white glow.
Gu Xiaoxi also felt the fruits brought many benefits to her body, especially when placed in her energy reserves, even if she felt her Spiritual Power was depleted, they wouldn’t harm her.
Otherwise, after days of continuous rescues, she would have long reached her limit and passed out.
She picked up the fruits and tried to separate the Immortal qi from them using her Inner Strength, then distributed the white light evenly among her companions.
With every fruit she separated, the Immortal qi on it became thinner, and at last, many fruits turned ordinary after she had separated the qi.
However, the pearly fruits still contained the effects of longevity.
Gu Xiaoxi put the fruits back into her energy reserves.
She looked up at the moon above, almost an hour had passed.
So she turned around to look at everyone and whistled.
Those who were asleep almost instinctively jumped up from the ground.
Shao Changfeng rubbed his stiff arms from fatigue and touched his head, looking at Gu Xiaoxi and said, "An hour passed so quickly?"
"Maybe because of the weather today, everyone is exhausted. This one hour felt like just a minute," Che Junqing said.
"Everyone, hurry, time is life. Four days have gone by, I hope the people in the small town can hold on," Gu Xiaoxi said.
Ai Xiang exhaled slowly; though still very tired, she felt considerably more spirited than before.
Everyone quickly packed up and set off for the distant small town.
On the way, they hadn’t gone far.
Gu Xiaoxi heard a faint cry for help in the woods.
Because her ears were exceptionally sensitive.
Without thinking, she immediately led everyone towards the source of the sound.
Soon, they found the origin of the voices.
A middle-aged man was buried under rocks that had rolled down from the mountain, with half his body pressed down, only his shoulders and head exposed.
The one crying out for help was a seven or eight-year-old child.
Protected by his father, only his legs were trapped under his father’s body; no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t pull out his legs.
For four days, he survived by relying on a jujube tree by the roadside.
Finally, someone came to their rescue.
Ai Xiang ran over as fast as she could.
The middle-aged man on the ground was already breathless, and the child appeared to be so weak he was barely clinging to life, particularly pale-faced from excessive blood loss.
"Soldier brother, please save my dad," the boy clung tightly to Ai Xiang’s hand, looking at his immobile father, seemingly unable to believe his father had left him.
Gu Xiaoxi and her team looked at the mountain of rocks pressing down on them with very heavy hearts.
It must have been during the earthquake that the ground split apart and rocks rolled down from the mountain, piling up.
To rescue the dead father and the injured child, they had to move the mountain-like pile of rocks.
Otherwise, the cascading rocks, if they disturbed the supporting ones below, could collapse again, injure people, and fail to save anyone.
Even though they were already low on energy, a living life was before them.
Even if they had to move the entire mountain, they would do it.
Ai Xiang examined the boy’s wounds and said, "If he isn’t saved immediately, his life is in danger."
Gu Xiaoxi led everyone to move the rocks quickly.
Rock after rock, some were so large it took several people to carry them away.
After a full hour, the mountain-like pile of rocks was finally moved.
The boy’s father’s body gradually became visible.
But what met their eyes was only a sea of bloodstained red.
The middle-aged man was almost smashed to pieces.
The little boy who had been rescued after much effort had suffered severe injuries due to his legs being trapped for a prolonged time. Below his calves, amputation was necessary. Otherwise, he wouldn’t survive till tomorrow.
Gu Xiaoxi turned to Ai Xiang and said, "You perform the surgery on him first, and I’ll call headquarters to request a plane for support."
Now, even her spiritual power could not save the little boy, especially the area below his calves which had been crushed flat, with all the bones shattered.
However, seeing such a young age about to lose his legs, everyone felt sorrowful for him. But what else could be done?
Ai Xiang performed surgery on the little boy, and a full hour passed.
By then, it was morning, and daylight had already dawned.
Yet they were still half the distance away from the designated town.
The military dispatched a helicopter, which quickly transferred the injured boy to a temporary medical station.
An hour’s rest followed by several more hours of busyness
did little to alleviate everyone’s fatigue.
As daylight broke, they continued on their way, carrying medical supplies on their backs.
After a trek of three hours,
they finally arrived at the small town.
The low houses had almost entirely collapsed.
The retro gate at the entrance of the town had long since shattered, the ground riddled with countless cracks, and ancient trees toppled over.
The surviving people were all gathered on the lawn, where the village doctor was tending to the injured villagers.
Upon seeing Gu Xiaoxi and her team arrive, everyone stood up and gazed at them.
"We have brought emergency medical supplies, please tell us of any difficulties you may have," Gu Xiaoxi said earnestly after looking around at everyone.
Soon, the mayor of the town came forward.
An elderly man over sixty, he approached Gu Xiaoxi shakily, his white hair reflecting his agitation, moved forward to grasp her hand, "Our town is not big, and wherever necessary, we have already searched.
We only hope that you can help us look at our injured friends.
Our pharmacy has been buried underground.
The medicines we found are very limited, and there are many injured. "
Ai Xiang immediately stepped forward, and two nurses began to provide emergency treatment.
Gu Xiaoxi patted the mayor’s hand and spoke with a heavy heart, "Don’t worry, I will make sure that everyone is rescued."
Saying this, Gu Xiaoxi arranged for everyone to rest at a designated safe spot.
She led her team with the search equipment, continuing to rescue people.
The post-disaster town could be described as a ghost town, even in daylight, standing amidst the chaotic and desolate ruins made one’s scalp tingle.
The thought of how many had died here made it even more distressing.
Under the search of Gu Xiaoxi and her team using the equipment, they rescued over ten villagers who had been buried underground and, by good fortune, had not been injured.
Several people had been shielded from the heavy cement slabs of the houses by iron frames and were uninjured, merely weakened from fright and hunger.
Because in the aftermath of the disaster, some water and food had been found in the tiny supermarket, which could barely sustain everyone for the short term.
Gu Xiaoxi continued the search and rescue with her team.
After a day of rescue work, they finally completed the search of the entire town.
In the end, they rescued over twenty people.
That evening, Gu Xiaoxi returned to the temporary camp that had been set up.
The weather in the mountains was still quite cool.
At this time, everyone finally breathed a sigh of relief, able to rest for a while.
Several fires were lit in the camp, and all the injured had received treatment.
The villagers gathered around the stoves, sharing their survivor stories and recounting the loved ones they had lost.
This made the atmosphere on-site even heavier.
Many parents who had lost their children or children who had lost their parents sat silently by the fireside.
The firelight glinted in everyone’s eyes, reflecting a shiny brightness.
Suddenly, a child’s cry made everyone look up and turn towards the little girl sitting in the middle of a group.
She was about six years old, an age where she was just beginning to understand the world.
She covered her eyes, sobbing, and eventually, unable to hold back her heart’s anguish from losing her family, she burst into loud crying.
Gu Xiaoxi moved forward with a heavy heart, pulled the little girl into her arms, and looking at the glistening tears on her eyelashes, she consoled, "Don’t cry! I’m sure your parents would want you to be well. If you cry, they will be sad watching from heaven."
"I miss them!" the little girl said with a choked voice. "Daddy got hit by a falling beam while saving me, and he coughed up lots of blood. Mommy threw me outside the door to go back and save Daddy. After that, they never came out. Sister, they are all dead, and I don’t want to live either."
Gu Xiaoxi did not know how a six-year-old child could have such complex thoughts, but she had to persuade her.
Because after a disaster, every living life is extremely precious.
