Heat crept across my cheeks as I turned to answer. Stella stood nearby, leaning against the open door frame, smiling at me.
“Good.”
“What did you say?” Her brow creased. “You’re mumbling.”
“Am I?” I quickly turned back to my sewing. “It was good. You know, regular job. Not much to say.”
Her small hand on my shoulder blade pushed me to turn back around. “Really?” Her bemused tone reached me. She wasn’t letting this go.
“Yup.” I shook off her hand and got back to work. The sound of the sewing machine filled the air when I felt her presence at my back. After a minute, she shifted away, and I let out the sigh I was holding.
It wasn’t until the machine stopped mid-stitch that I realized she hadn’t left the room. She’d moved to the wall just out of my sight and unplugged it. “What the hell, Stella?”
I glanced at the bra. I really liked this piece and wanted to finish it today. My window of opportunity to work on it was closing.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Did you need this plugged in to work?”
I glared at her and jumped up. “You’re not funny, Stella.” Even with my hands reaching as high as they could go, I knew how futile this was. Stella had at least five inches on me and had a lithe dancer’s body. She could move and twist in ways I could only dream of.
“Tell me what happened to make you clam up, and you’ll get it back.”
I shifted my gaze to the door and dropped my shoulders then plopped back down into my seat. “Shut the door.”
“Oh my god. This must be good.” Stella squealed with glee. Skipping to the door, she shut it and grabbed a nearby stool. She leaned her elbows on her knees and propped her chin in her hands.
“I, uh, got the job.”
Stella rolled her eyes, clearly impatient that I started there.
“Give me a second, Stella.” I blew out a breath, making the strand of hair that had fallen in front of my face puff up. “I’m afraid I might not be asked back.”
“What? Why? What the hell did you do, Ash?”
“I might have walked in on the president’s son in a towel in his private bathroom,” I said so fast my words ran together.
Stella’s eyes widened. “Sugar honey iced tea. Well, if you’re getting fired, at least you made it interesting. Was he at least hot?”
I snorted and then laughed. Trust Stella to make the situation feel a little better than it did ten minutes ago. I should have called her last night after I got home or even this morning.
I’d been worrying myself sick about what happened and whether I would be terminated. “His body was amazing.” I pretended to wipe the drool from my face. “He had abs for miles, and I’m pretty sure he knew I was staring.”
“How do you know?”
“I didn’t leave right away.” I groaned. “It was like watching a train wreck. I couldn’t look away.”
“Did you say anything?”
“Yes, it was so embarrassing. I told him he was hot. Then he asked me if I was going to stare all day. It was like the spell was broken, and I ran.”
“Are you kidding me? Did anyone see you?”
“No, but he ran after me.”
She slapped the arm of the chair. “No, he did not!”
I covered my face with my hands and nodded.
“Why was he chasing you?”
