Dad’s cell phone number flashed across the screen.
“Hey, Dad. Now’s not a good—”
“Dean ... ” The shaky voice of Dad’s assistant trickled out in a faint whisper.
“Lois?”
“It’s your Dad. I’ve called an ambulance ... ” Her sob tore through me. Fear gripped my heart as I raced for the elevator. I slammed my finger over and over on the button to open the doors, cursing the slowness of the damn machine.
I leapt through once the opening was big enough. The steel of the doors brushed against my arms. With one last lingering glance at the big L for Lobby button, I tapped on the button for my father’s floor.
I’m sorry Ash.
I hated having to make this choice.
“Lois, I’m on my way.”
CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
Ashlyn
“What do you mean herefused to see me?” Tears filled my eyes. “I guess even knowing the truth wasn’t enough. He hates me because I’m related to Elaine.”
“He’s not worth your tears.”
I sniffed. “I know, but I can’t turn it off, Stella. I still love him even if he is a jerk.”
“I know.” She leaned across the console of my car and wrapped me in a hug. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. I kind of get it.” I wiped at my face. “Can you do one more thing for me?”
“Anything.”
With sadness weighing me down, I grabbed my purse off the floor. The back zipper pocket still held the envelope Dean gave me. I’d wanted to cash his check, but felt weird about him giving me money. Hastily, I scribbled Dean’s name on the front.
I ran my fingers over the necklace he’d given me. I had a strong suspicion the necklace wasn’t costume jewelry and knew this had to go back too. My fingers trembled as I unhooked the clasp. I dropped the necklace into the envelope and sealed it before I changed my mind and handed it to Stella.
