Story: Ember Dragon
Many novel items appeared at the auction. Although their functions weren't very powerful, their uses were quite bizarre and varied, which broadened Cassius's horizons.
However, he soon wanted to earn some extra money himself.
So, under Cassius's command, the "Iron Golem" took out several scales from a dimensional bag.
"What are these?"
"There seems to be residual lightning elements on them, reacting intensely."
"Are these dragon scales?"
Everyone observed carefully, but no one could discern their origin, and Cassius just smiled without speaking.
"They are scales of a Bluefoot Dragon Serpent."
Lady Starlight stated confidently.
"Armor made from these scales has the effect of protecting against lightning, and these scales still have residual elements. They must be less than ten years old. In the hands of some masters, they can even be made into magical items that can release evocation spells like Chain Lightning and Lightning Bolt."
Cassius then said, "Your extensive knowledge genuinely impresses me."
Lady Starlight smiled slightly, seeming quite pleased.
"However... please wait a moment."
The "Iron Golem" at his side had several dimensional bags tied around its waist. It emptied them one by one, and they were all filled with Bluefoot Dragon Serpent scales.
"So many?"
"My goodness, how many armors can be made from these?"
"They must have killed a Bluefoot Dragon Serpent, or even more than one."
While everyone was discussing, Cassius announced a number:
"All of these, for a total of two thousand gold coins."
For a moment, everyone fell silent; no one could produce that much gold at once.
After a moment's hesitation, Gray Eagle said, "Five hundred gold coins; I'll take a quarter of them."
"Seeker" followed, "I'll do the same."
Thus, half of Cassius's scales, which had been accumulating dust for years, were sold for a thousand gold coins. He had actually played a little trick.
Those scales had been piled up in the nest for many years; he was very familiar with them and could use the dragon's innate "Object Location" spell-like ability to determine their position, with a range of several kilometers.
Just when he entered earlier, he noticed that Gray Eagle's robe subtly revealed a badge on his chest—an eagle and a sharp sword.
"I hope you store them well in your vault."
"When the time comes—"
"I'll come to find you."
Cassius looked at the buyer with a kindly gaze; the other party didn't think much of it, only assuming he was pleased with the transaction.
The item exchange segment quickly ended.
Besides sharing spell knowledge, exchanging research results, and auctioning items, the Arcane Hermetic Society sometimes took the opportunity to seek help in eradicating evil. For example, Gray Eagle was now issuing a call.
"Ember Nest—you may not have heard of this name, but this evil force has expanded throughout the Storm Highlands and even threatens surrounding countries. Ogres, wyverns, chimeras—those evil and terrifying monsters are gathering together."
"Ember Nest?"
"I think I've heard some adventurers nearby mention it."
"That land of death?"
"Their leader seems to be a red dragon."
Gray Eagle gritted his teeth and said, "Exactly! Their leader is a brutal red dragon—those despicable reptiles."
"Dragons—these creatures are born with immense power, yet they still attempt to take everything from us."
"Their greed is endless; they covet more and more, trying to possess all the treasures in the world. People like us who stand for justice should step forward—"
Hearing this, Olivia frowned slightly but didn't say much.
It was Cassius who timely interrupted: "Lord Gray Eagle, you're somewhat generalizing. Aren't there benevolent dragons like gold and silver dragons among them?
"These noble creatures are far more deserving of the word 'justice' than mortals."
"Indeed."
Olivia subconsciously nodded slightly.
But she quickly realized her inappropriate words and noticed Cassius's smiling gaze.
She looked deeply at Cassius and said no more.
"The goodwill of dragons..."
Cassius thought to himself; this is the contradiction of these metallic dragons.
On one hand, they have extremely long lifespans and believe themselves to be far more noble than other creatures, like most dragons, so they would never view other beings from an equal perspective.
But at the same time, these metallic dragons are "good," willing to help the weak and promote their own justice, making their actions more akin to condescending charity to pets.
Having his speech interrupted, Gray Eagle was somewhat displeased but continued, "Currently, Dukes Lackmann, Borsk, and Notte are organizing a coalition army, preparing to join forces to eradicate the evil on this land and attack the Ember Nest."
"However... the coalition still lacks some spellcasters. If any of you here are willing to fight for Anzeta's order and peace, you can contact me. My family can also offer sufficient rewards to those who step forward; at least the price will surely satisfy you."
"But that so-called Ember Nest hasn't attacked you yet, has it?"
"So why... are you initiating a war?"
Olivia asked softly.
Silver dragons do not like war; they detest injustice and cruelty. However, unlike gold dragons who love to be arch-enemies of evil and despicable behavior, silver dragons are more concerned with protecting the innocent and healing their wounds than punishing or eradicating wrongdoers.
Seeing the highest-ranking person speak, Gray Eagle hurriedly said, "Lady Starlight, it's a red dragon; you can expect the worst from it."
"Its claws and flames can make us homeless at any time; it will abduct our wives and daughters, destroy our homes, and the only thing we can do... is to strike first."
"Clap, clap, clap!"
Applause echoed in the spacious hall.
—It was from Cassius.
"Well said, Lord Gray Eagle. This red dragon indeed threatens Anzeta's peace and order. There's a saying in my homeland: With great power comes great responsibility."
"As spellcasters favored by the world, we indeed have a responsibility to uphold justice and eliminate these brutal and evil beings. I believe everyone here thinks the same."
"I, and the forces behind me, are willing to contribute to the coalition's crusade."
Cassius's words were forceful and resonant.
Seeing the wealthy and mysterious Cassius's strong support, Gray Eagle was overjoyed, completely forgetting his earlier displeasure. He stepped forward to compliment:
"Lord Ember, to oppose a dragon for justice—I truly respect you."
Cassius waved his hand and said, "It's nothing; we are all on the path of pursuing justice. This is what we should do."
"Exactly."
Applause came from all around.
The two shook hands warmly, smiles on their faces, but each harbored ulterior motives, each thinking the other was a fool. Only Cassius had more information at his disposal.
