Chapter 41
Cecilia
As I walk into my apartment from work, the smile vanishes from my face.
A large duffel bag, huge suitcase, and stuffed backpack sit by the door.
My heart drops at the realization.
Today’s the last day.
Gracie’s sitting on the couch and when she sees me, her eyes well up, matching my teary ones.
“It’s already time?” I whisper around the lump in my throat.
“Yeah. Off to London I go.” She walks over and gives me a hug. “I’m going to miss you.”
“Stop!” I choke out, knowing if she becomes any more emotional, it’ll break me. “It’s only for the summer semester. You’ll be back in three months, and I’ll be here waiting.”
“Three months feels like eternity,” she grumbles.
I feel the exact same way, but I won’t let her know that. She’s been so excited to study abroad. For as long as I’ve known her,it’s been her dream to go to London. I’m so happy she’s finally able to do it.
“It’s going to be a great experience. Time’s going to fly by so quickly. Enjoy it. You’ve wanted this for so long.” I pull her into another hug, and we hold on to each other.
Gracie’s not big on physical touch, so this long hug speaks volumes.
“I will. I’m really excited,” she tells me. “And you’ll be great here. Roman will keep you company. Just, be careful.”
“I’ll be fine. Nothing bad ever happens in Boston.”
“You’re an idiot.” She rolls her eyes at me. “Just don’t leave Roman. He’ll take care of you.”
“I have no intentions of letting him go,” I say with a blush.
“Good. Don’t forget, if anything happens, call me. Time difference be damned, I’m always here for you. I love you, girl.”
“I love you too! And the same goes for me. I’m only a call away. Now, I’m going to cook us dinner. Anything you want,” I tell her, wanting to do one last thing for her.
“You don’t have to. But if you do, can you make the Ecuadorian steak and eggs?” she asks with a grin, knowing that of course I’ll make churrasco Ecuatoriano for her.
While we eat, I double check her plan for tomorrow and make sure she’s checked in for her flight. She insists on taking the T to the airport, so tonight is our last time seeing each other.
We stay up way too late. I insist she goes to bed before her early flight. She insists she’s sleeping on the plane, so it’s fine.
At three a.m., we part ways with a final hug.
I fall asleep with a heavy heart. I know this is for the best, but I’m going to miss my best friend.
At least Roman is here for me. I don’t think he has any intention of leaving.
And neither do I.
Chapter 42
Roman
“Are you sure there isn’t anything I can do to help? I hate sitting around while you do all the cooking,” I offer.
