Ivy

The house had been quiet with Ghost gone, doing whatever it was he did.

I was still trying to process everything he’d told me about being a contract killer.

I knew he was into some dangerous shit, but never imagined his job was literally to kill people for a living.

Still, strangely, I wasn’t afraid of him.

Back at the café, Ghost had shown me another side of himself…

one I kept locked in my mind that made me certain he wouldn’t hurt me.

He’d texted a few times, checking in, reminding me not to use the burner phone for anything else.

I’d been feeling off all morning, fighting the urge to gag every time I stood up too fast. My appetite came and went in waves, but mostly it was gone.

I knew my body was stressed, carrying everything that had been happening so, when I got a text from Ghost this morning, telling me Tori was on her way, I felt a flicker of relief.

When I hit my lowest with breakdowns and dark nights of depression, Tori was always there.

Crawling into bed with me, holding me while I cried.

Today wouldn’t be about crying though and couldn’t wait to tell her how much my life had changed these past few weeks.

My stomach was in knots as I stood in the mirror, applying some lip gloss and fluffing out my girls.

Tori had seen me at my worst but the last thing I wanted to do was look like I had been going through hell when she got here.

An hour later, I spotted her smoke grey Kia K5 creeping up the long driveway. I opened the door before she could even step foot out of the car.

“TORI!”

She jumped out, looking around at the trees like something was about to jump out, but when she saw me, that all disappeared.

“Bitch! You got explaining to do.”

We ran to each other and hugged tightly. She grabbed my face, looking me over.

“What the hell, Ivy? You got me out here in the woods like this is some thriller movie, bitch,” she said looking around. “Plus, I could’ve sworn somebody was foll?—”

Another car pulled in behind her. Tori turned, already tense.

“Who the hell is that?”

Ghost stepped out, calm as ever and sexy as hell, dressed in all black and scanning the area before his eye landed on us.

“That’s… him,” I said quietly.

Tori crossed her arms. “So, you’re the mysterious ‘friend’?”

Ghost gave her a once over. “She safe. That’s all that matters.”

I couldn’t put my finger on it, but something was off with him. Ghost was hardcore but he was …. different with me. Right now, I couldn’t even get him to make eye contact which raised a major flag for me.

“You better hope she stays that way, mister…?”

He smirked. “Duly noted.”

He turned me. “You good?”

I nodded. “Better now, I said, stepping closer to him. “Are you good?”

He stepped back, causing me to frown. “I’ll be back, later. Only use the burner to call me and lock up, too.”

He lingered for half a second like he wanted to say more. But instead, he pulled the car door open and got in. Tori and I stood there, watching him disappear down the tree-lined road.

“Is your ‘friend’ always cold like that or what? That nigga seems uptight as fuck, Ivy. You sure you okay here with him?”

“Girl, I’m fine. Trust me, he never asks like that. Something must be going on with him. He is so sweet and gentle with me, Tori,” I admitted, blushing. “But, enough about that. We most definitely have some catching up to do.”

Tori looked back one final time before turning to follow me into the house. “Mhmm. I bet we do.”

Back inside, we crashed on the couch as tori kicked her shoes around and looked around the place before focusing back on me.

“This house is nice as hell, Ivy. You can show me round later but right now, I need answers. What the details on this lil friend you have?”

“Ok… so hear me out,” I said, letting out a deep breath before starting from the beginning.

“He broke into the shop one night a few weeks ago, injured and bleeding. I didn’t know what to do first because he was a fucking stranger and he had a gun, but something in my gut told me to just help him…

so I did. I patched him up and after that, he stayed around and recovered, and it just went from there.

Things… happened,” I said, looking down and I fidgeted with my fingers.

Tori’s eyes widened. “What the fuck, Ivy?! He broke in? Why? And the bigger question is, what the fuck happened to him the reason he was injured and bleeding?”

“So, apparently, someone had tried to kill him, and he barely got away,” I said keeping it short. I wasn’t sure I wanted her to know everything that Ghost was into. Yeah, I trust her, but it wasn’t my story to tell.

“And now y’all out her in the woods playing house?”

“It’s not like that,” I said, holding back a laugh. “It’s complicated. After that night... things shifted. We got to know each other, we vibed and I saw something in him that I wasn’t expecting. We only came here to let the heat die down before I went back home.”

The thought of going back home caused a weird feeling in my stomach. Ghost and I had been in hog heaven these past few days, but the realization was, I would eventually have to go back home, and I didn’t know what would happen with us.

“How long after that did y’all fuck?” Tori asked, narrowing her eyes. “And don’t play with me, cause’ I can tell by the way you walking that you been fucked, Ivy. Real good at that.”

I burst out laughing. “Not long.”

I shook my head, still half in disbelief. “It’s crazy, because I use to have all these thoughts and standards about what type of man I wanted to take my virginity. I was holding on to this fantasy of being in love, making it special. Girl, all shit went straight out the window with him.”

I met her gaze, my voice dropping. “I didn’t give a fuck that I’d only met him days ago. My body was craving him, screaming for him to touch it and I tried to fight it. I really did, but after a while, I gave in. I made the move on him, knowing damn well I had no clue what I was doing.”

“So, he was there the day I stopped by the shop, right?”

I gave her a smirk.

“Girl, I knew it. You were way to damn jumpy that day,” she said, shaking her head. “So, I guess the real question is… how was it?”

“When I say it was next level? Girl… were right. One time and I was hooked,” I squealed.

She leaned forward. “Wait, wait. You mean to tell me you bee?—”

“I’ve been climbing this man like a tree every chance I get. He got me addicted to him and I don’t give a damn about how toxic that sounds.”

Tori screamed, laughing. “Not little miss I want to wait for love, obsessing over dick she barely know.”

“That man got demon dick, Tori. I ain’t even ashamed to say that I wanted him to fuck me the first night... hurt, bleeding and all,” I laughed. And he knows his way around my body very well. I be laid the fuck out, questioning my whole life after.”

We doubled over cracking up like two kids who couldn’t keep a secret. Suddenly, I sat back, feeling a wavy of dizziness take over.

Tori frowned. “You good?”

“Yeah, just lightheaded. Probably because I haven’t eaten yet. I was so excited to see you, food hadn’t crossed my mind.”

She tilted her head, studying me. “Now that I think about, you do look pale as hell. Ivy, what going on with you?”

I opened my mouth, but she cut me off.

“Hold up. Y’all been using condoms, right?”

I hesitated. Mentally cursing myself, because I only remember using one, once. After that… in the heat of the moment, it slipped my mind every time. Her jaw dropped.

“Oh my God. Ivy.”

“I mean… the first time, yeah. But after that, we weren’t really thinking about it... well, I wasn’t. You know I’m not experienced with stuff like this Tori. Hell, the erotica I read even mention protection so?—”

“And that’s exactly why your hot ass shouldn’t have been fucking without calling me first,” Tori stood up. “Grab your shoes. We about to go find out. I think I passed a pharmacy not too far from here.”

“What? No. Ghost said?—”

“Ghost? You got to be fucking kidding me, Ivy Monroe. You’ve been laid up placing house with a nigga name Ghost? It’s a setup, bitch. He probably fucking your brains out just to Ghost you once he find out you’re pregnant!”

“Ghost is not his real name, Tori,” I groaned. It’s Roman…Roman Carter. Ghost is just… like his work name.”

“If you say so. But enough with all the stalling. Ghost ain’t here so what he don’t know won’t hurt him. And we’ll be quick. Come on.”

There was no point in trying to argue with her about it because she wasn’t taking no for an answer, even if she had to drag me out of here kicking and screaming to the car…

she would. After locking the house up and seeing no signs of Ghost returning right now.

We slid in her car and made the ride into town in silence.

My thoughts were so loud in my head, going over how I could’ve missed the signs.

I hadn’t had my period but it was always abnormal when I was going through stuff, so it wasn’t a major red flag.

With the lifestyle that Ghost lived, would he even want this?

Would I want this with him… a paid killer?

My thoughts were running wild, and I wasn’t even sure if I was pregnant or not.

“Get out your head, Ivy. Whether you are or aren’t, everything will be fine, and you have to believe that. Your bestie is here, bitch so, cheer up, she said, pulling up to the small-town pharmacy. “Sit tight, I’ll run in here and get and then we’ll be back before Ghost knows anything.”

I slumped low in the seat while she ran into the pharmacy. She’d only been gone for five minutes when she came back out and tossed a brown bag in my lap. I pulled back from it like it had a disease or something. I leaned my head on the window, deep in thought as we took the short drive back.
