Story: Saving the Pack's Omega
“I—I was shot,” she says, trying to laugh, her voice strained with pain.
“Fuck,” Madden hisses under his breath. He steps over a couple of the corpses and makes his way to Luna, who’s still curledup, leaning against the foot of my bed. “Let me take a look, Angel. I have to see how bad it is.”
His hands tremble as he reaches out.
She winces as she pulls away her hand. I wish I could see how bad it is, but my entire body is still shaky. I don’t know if I can stand just yet.
Madden whips off his t-shirt and wraps it around her shoulder, trying to stop the blood. “It’s a clean shot through. You don’t have the bullet still in you.”
“That’s a good thing, right?” She asks, wincing at the pressure.
“Yes.” Madden swallows hard. “It’s as good of a bullet wound as a bullet wound can be.”
Guilt sits heavy on my chest. Why can’t I breathe? I can kill seven men without blinking but I can’t get air into my lungs?
How in the world could I have let Luna get hurt?
“Kane,” Luna calls out softly. “I can see what you’re thinking. Stop it. It’s not your fault.”
“No, I failed you, you got hurt because of me?—”
“No, actually, I got hurt because I decided to jump between you and the guy with the gun. I’d say that’s my fault,” Luna says.
“Youwhat?” Madden hisses.
Luna winces.
“Yeah, not smart, I know. I just didn’t know what else to do. The guy was going to shoot Kane.” She turns back to me. “And again, it’s not your fault. It’s the fault of the crazy people trying to kill us.”
My jaw clenches and I bare my teeth in a snarl. “Whoever dares attack you. Attack the pack house. They’re dead. I vow it. When I get my hands on them?—”
Another explosion rocks the house and I clench my hands into fists by my side. Sitting here and freaking the fuck out won’t do anything to help us get out of this situation.
I close my eyes, taking a deep breath. When I open my eyes, my hands feel less shaky.
“What does it look like outside?”
“Bad. This is a planned attack,” Madden glances at the corpses in the room, pursing his lips. “I think they’re after Luna.”
CHAPTER 39
Luna
Dread pools in my gut. It would make sense they’re after me, but still. It’s terrifying.
“There weren’t nearly as many men trying to get me in my room. I took out two at first,” Madden continues.
My eyes are drawn to the tattoos on his bare chest. Now is a horrible time to get distracted, but hey, even surrounded by a ton of dead bodies, I can say the way Madden whipped off his shirt was hot.
“There were two men in here first,” I say, my voice still strained with the pain of the bullet wound. “Do you think they told others that I was in here with Kane?”
Kane clears his throat. “If there were only two that Madden took out, then that would be most likely.”
“You doing okay, man?” Madden asks, taking a step towards his pack mate.
He glances down at me as if it pains him to create any sort of distance between us, given my injured state, but I give him a reassuring smile.
Kane needs help, too.
