Story: Relentless Oath
“Lying isn’t your strongpoint, Mya.”
“I swear?—”
He turned to walk away from me, and I grabbed his arm to stop him. He pulled away from me.
“Perhaps it would be better if you did leave.”
I reeled back, I wasn’t expecting that. Would he let me leave? Willingly? Would he throw me out? I was showing. I was due in a couple of months.
Out there, I wasn’t safe. I’d been deceiving myself. Life as Dario’s wife wasn’t just scary because of Dario, it was scary because of his numerous enemies.
As much as it pained me, it was clear I was safer with him…at least for now.
My brain scrambled to come up with something to defuse his anger.
“I was just trying to secure our child’s future.”
“By flirting with one of my lackeys?”
“By forging alliances. If you haven’t noticed, you’re not very good at it. You shoot or stab people without a moment’s thought.”
He shook his head. “You’re lying. What was your plan exactly? Come on, let me know. I’m dying to hear what you thought Jonathan could do for you.”
I ran a nervous hand through my hair. “I already told you?—”
Shaking his head, he turned away from me. “This is ridiculous.”
“Dario—”
He turned back around and his eyes were so cold, I took a step back. “This conversation is finished. I can’t trust you; that much is clear. Of all the people you could have run to, Jonathan was the stupidest choice. If you want to get away from me so badly, I can make it happen. I can make sure no one ever finds you. Is that clear?”
I gasped. His eyes were cold and emotionless. And at that moment, I believed he would make good on his threat.
“You wouldn’t…the baby…what are you saying?”
He shook his head slowly. “Do that again, and there won’t be time for excuses or pleading. Do you understand?”
Without waiting for my response, he left.
I’d gotten myself into a situation I couldn’t handle. I didn’t know what to do next.
After all our guests were gone, later that evening, Dario yet again disappeared. This time, I was sure it was because he didn’t want to be around me. I didn’t blame him. He couldn’t trust me. I barely trusted myself.
What had been my plan? Jonathan hadn’t even been a real plan. He was just the only one who had seemed dumb enough to listen to me, to answer my questions.
I’d been desperate. I hadn’t been thinking and I made a stupid decision, a miscalculation. What had I been thinking?
And I’d almost gotten him killed. I didn’t trust myself not to make another stupid, rash decision.
That morning, I woke up early because I had an appointment with a new doctor. Dario, thankfully, wasn’t going with me.
I got into the car and sat down, staring out the window, wondering what the hell I was going to do next. That’s when I saw it. A small envelope sat there with my name on it.
Was it from Dario? My hands shook as I read it. It was from Matteo. And he was offering me a way out.
