Story: Relentless Oath
“Dario! I swear, man. I would never. You know me, man, come on…” he said something else. I couldn’t hear because Mya was screaming at me to stop.
“Shut up!” I yelled at them both.
I was always in control. I didn’t raise my voice. I never lost it but seeing his hands on Mya. “Three.”
I was going to pull the trigger.
“Two.”
“Dario!”
She pushed herself in front of Jonathan, and now my gun was pointed at her. Her eyes pleaded with mine. I was still seeing red. She placed a hand on her stomach.
Reasoning pushed through the over reactive reptilian part of my brain. I dropped my arm to the side, my finger still on the trigger.
Jonathan sighed and sunk down on the bench, still holding his arm. “You’re fucking crazy man, fucking crazy. Call me an ambulance for fuck’s sake,” he whined.
I couldn’t help myself. “One.”
He leaped back as the shot just grazed his leg. “Next time, I won’t be as kind.”
Then I turned to Mya and said, “Inside now.”
CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE
Mya
Fuck.Fuck. Fuck. I fucked up so bad.
My heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest. I stared at him and he looked back at me, his jaw clenched. What would he do to me? I’d never seen him angry. At least, not like this.
“Dario, I can explain?—”
He shook his head slowly. There was something about his quiet rage that was scary. What had Jonathan said about him?
That no one saw him coming, that his enemies never expected a thing. Finally, I saw what was so intimidating.
It was his silence as he studied you, knowing that he was trying to figure out ways to make you pay.
I had to think quickly. He turned toward the house, and I cast a glance at Jonathan who waved me away.
“Go with the crazy fucker before he shoots me again.”
“I’m so sorry,” I mumbled as I rushed to catch up with Dario.
Apparently, I wasn’t quick enough. He was already in the hallway when I caught up with him. He rounded on me.
“So, this was your plan? Sell me out to the highest bidder? What did Jonathan promise you? What was the plan, Mya? Have me killed so that you wouldn’t have to worry about me?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” I snapped. Then, a thought occurred to me. “Oh my God. You think I’m the mole in the household.”
He hadn’t cared. He didn’t bat an eyelash at the thought of murdering a man in front of me. The look in his eyes sent a chill down my spine.
A man could have been dead for daring to even talk to me. I had underestimated Dario in this way.
“Did you get what you wanted?” his voice was cold. I kept my eyes down. I couldn’t think of anything to say that would make things better.
“I wasn’t trying to betray you.”
“Shut up!” I yelled at them both.
