“What was that for?” she asks.

“Just love you,” I say. “What book are you reading? For book club or for fun?”

“Well, reading isalwaysfun,” she starts, and I exaggeratedly scoff. I’ve no more become a book lover than she has become a baseball lover, but we love each other plenty. “This particular book happens to be for book club. You still good to hang with Jason while I go this week?”

“Always,” I say. Jason is on my other side cheering for something happening in the game, but I continue my appreciative perusal of Danae. She perches her sunglasses on top of her head and reaches over to nudge the rim of my ballcap a little higher.

Then she leans in to kiss me again, several seconds longer than “quick.”

“What was that for?” I ask, smiling at her.

“I just loveyou.”
