Story: Titan Of My Heart

“My stomach been feeling like Jell-O and this salt seems to be helping,” I said, shrugging.

I saw a waitress across the room putting down a slice of cherry pie with whipped cream and I wanted a slice too.

I waved our waitress over and asked for two slices with extra whipped cream.

I ate the last bite of my sandwich and when I looked up at Marlow she was looking at me strangely.

“Why you looking at me like that?” I asked then thanked the waitress who sat my pie slices in front of me. I did a little dance in my seat and when I took a bite, I closed my eyes in bliss. “This is so good you want a piece?” I asked, just to be polite, but honestly, I didn’t want to share.

“Nah you go head. Quick question, when did you start liking cherries? Especially the canned cherries they use for cherry pie?” She tilted her head to the side causing her long faux locs to fall over her shoulder.

“What’s with the questions? I’m hungry, and I feel like eating.” I snapped and went back to eating my pie.

“Ok, don’t bite my head off,” she said, chuckling as she reached into her Chanel bag for her wallet to pay our bill.

“I want another slice of pie to go,” I said to the waitress and Marlow started laughing.

“What?” I asked.

“Nothing. You got any meetings today?”

“No, but I have so much more paperwork to finish when we get back,” I said, feeling drained just thinking about it.

We left the deli, and went back to our office.

Once we hugged and parted ways, I briefly looked at Marlow as she was still looking at me funny.

I shrugged it off because my eccentric friend was always acting strange.

When I got back to my office, I set my pie down on the table in front of my couch and sat down. When I took my heels off, I sighed in relief as I rubbed the balls of my feet. When I was finished, I leaned back on the couch and now that I was full I was sleepy, so, I closed my eyes for a quick nap.

I woke to soft kisses on my lips, and I smiled. When my eyes drifted open I saw Titan kneeling next to me on the floor.

“Hey baby, what you doing here?” I asked, yawning, wiping the sleep from my eyes.

“You ok baby? You weren’t answering your phone,” he whispered and I saw the concern in his eyes. His tie was loose, and he was only wearing his white dress shirt and black suit pants.

“Babe, you came over here because I didn’t answer my phone for 30 minutes?” He looked surprised when I chuckled. He ran his hand up my back to help me sit up so I could stretch.

“Baby…. what time do you think it is?” He asked and when I looked toward the window, I saw the sun was setting outside, and my eyes widened in surprise.

“I thought it was around one or two in the afternoon. I laid down for a quick nap, what time is it?” I said, now feeling my heart rate increase.

“It’s almost eight in the evening baby.”

“Why the fuck did nobody wake me up? I have so much work to finish and now it just doubled.” I stood up and walked to my desk but paused when I saw an interoffice envelope addressed to me from Marlow.

“Why the hell she send me interoffice mail? She could have just called or texted me,” I questioned, shaking my head as I picked up the envelope and was confused when I felt a box inside.

“Shit, you been sleep baby. She probably didn’t want to disturb you. When you weren’t answering I called her, and she told me you were here before she left,” he said, giving me a kiss on the top of my hair before he wrapped his arms around me from behind.

“You worry too much Ty-ty.” I chuckled because I could feel him rolling his eyes at my nickname for him; he didn’t really like it, but he loved me, so he allowed it.

When I finally shook the box out of the envelope, I saw it was a pregnancy test, and I dropped it like it burned me.

“What the hell?” I screamed. “Why would she send this to me?” I was pissed off.

Was she playing some crazy ass joke on me?

Because this shit wasn’t funny. I watched Titan bend down to pick the box up and he stared at it for a few moments before he looked at me.

“Are you pregnant?” He asked, his voice sounded weird.

“Hell no, I don’t know what joke Marlow trying to play on me, but this shit ain’t funny.” I sat down in one of the chairs across from my desk.

“Why do you think she’s joking? Why does she think you’re pregnant?” He asked, twirling the box in his hands.

“I have no damn idea; we went out to eat, I had a soup and sandwich and cherry pie.”

“Since when do you eat cherries?” He asked and I rolled my eyes.

“Damn, I can’t like cherries? People evolve,” I said, annoyed as I felt my brain slowly start to convince me of something I didn’t want to admit right now.

He continued staring at me as he pulled his phone out. He scrolled through it for a moment and then looked at me.

“According to my calendar, your period’s late baby – almost four weeks,” he said, sitting down next to me and grabbing my hand.

“You know my periods are irregular since I got on birth control you remember when I bled for almost two weeks when I started it, and you were ready to take me to the ER?” I said not looking at him.

“I remember that, but baby can you humor me and take the test?” He asked gently, still sounding weird.

“Fine,” I remarked, snatching the test from his hands and going into the bathroom. When I was about to close the door, Titan put his big ass foot in the way. “You really about to watch me pee?”

“Girl, I’ve tasted and seen every inch of your body, don’t be shy now, baby,” he said while leaning in the doorway.

“Whatever.” I muttered as I read the instructions and told Titan how long it would take for the results, and he set the timer on his phone.

When I was done, I capped the test, and sat it on the counter.

Titan held his arms open and as soon as I walked into them he held me tightly and gently rocked me side to side as he ran his warm hand up and down my back.

I had too many thoughts racing through my mind because I wanted to wait to become a mom, I had so much shit I wanted to do before I had children, and me Titan were getting married in a few months.

I took a deep breath and let it out slowly.

Shit was already moving fast with me and Titan; we were engaged and going to be married in five months.

Now I might be pregnant? That meant I was going to be pregnant on my wedding day, ain’t nobody got time for that.

When I heard Titan’s timer, all the calm I was starting to feel, evaporated.

I took another deep breath as I turned around and picked up the test with shaking fingers.

“Pregnant,” I whispered and it sounded like I screamed it as my heart felt like it dropped to my feet.
