“I agree that you should come, Vicar.” Jade looked at Leviathan and Destiny. “Like he said, we share a connection. Outside of Thorulf, he’s the only one I’m telepathically connected with right now. I imagine that’ll be important with what lies ahead.” She appealed to everyone’s common sense. “After all, the more people Thorulf and I can connect to telepathically with an enemy in our midst, the better, wouldn’t you say?”

While Leviathan and Dagr seemed unsure, Thorulf, of all people, saw the wisdom in it.

“Jade’s right.” His expression was hard to read when he looked at his brother. “Vicar should come.”

She should be grateful for his support but again found herself irritated and knew full well why. Whether he was genuine or not, Thorulf keeping Vicar along conveyed the same message as him giving his brother the blade earlier.

He didn’t care what she did or who she did it with.

Or he was trying hard to make it seem that way.

“Dagr and I will go with them.” Maya looked at Leviathan and Destiny with reassurance. “Seeing how you’re one of the two most powerful couples around, better that you stay here and protect the Keep.” She glanced over her shoulder at something unseen and smiled. “Besides, we’ve got backup.”

It was odd knowing her sister was Queen of the Dead now and that she undoubtedly just looked at a ghost, but Jade could admit she was grateful for the backup even if her sister had withheld the truth.

Something she started to address but froze in her tracks when she saw the impossible.
