EPILOGUE

ARLENE

I paced around my room, my heart pounding.

Leah rolled her eyes as she adjusted her bridesmaid dress and the bow on Ruby’s hair. “You’re getting married, Arlene, not sent out to war. Calm down.”

She was still trying to keep my overactive feelings in check. Everything was ready for the wedding, but I couldn’t stop panicking.

Leah was my chief bridesmaid, Ruby was my flower girl, and Coral was my maid of honor. It felt amazing that everyone I knew and loved was seated outside, waiting for me to tie the knot.

Shawn and his family had flown everyone out to a remote island, which had a vineyard we would be getting married at. It was the most gorgeous place I’d ever seen, but never in a million years would I have imagined that any of this would be happening to me.It didn’t feel real, so it couldn’t be real.

“I can’t stop freaking out, Leah.”

Leah rolled her eyes for the millionth time today. “You had weeks to panic, though.”

I sucked in shallow breaths. “It didn’t dawn on me till now.”

She ignored me and went back to fawning over Ruby and Coral’s dresses and accessories.

I faced the mirror and tried to calm my nerves. I was wearing a stunning silk wedding dress that clung to my body and made me look ethereal.

It was almost time for me to walk down the aisle, and I couldn’t stop panicking. This was the day I’d dreamed about since I was a little girl. The day I never thought would happen, especially not as perfectly as this.

Shawn and I had gone through so much together, and somehow, we’d found a way to weather the storm. The door creaked open and Matilda Elton walked in. I’d become close to Shawn’s parents, which had been one of the biggest shocks I’d gotten from this whole thing.

She gasped as soon as she saw me. “You look gorgeous, dear.”

I smiled at her. “Thank you.”

“I just stopped by to give you something I think you will love.”

She handed me something, and I turned it around in my hand. “What’s this?”

“It’s the Elton women’s brooch. It has been in the family for generations, and every woman coming into the family wears it on her wedding day.”

My eyes welled up and I tried not to cry. “Thank you so much.” I fanned my face, trying to dry up the tears before they could ruin my makeup. “I love it.”

“Alright, I better go before we both become bawling messes.”

With that, she headed out of the room.

When I was as ready as I could be, Leah, Ruby, and Coral left first. And then, still shivering with nerves, I stepped out of the room and walked down the aisle.

Shawn stood at the end, looking extremely handsome and slightly nervous.

The wedding ceremony happened fast: from the repeated vows to the ring exchange, and a lot of tears from the people close to me.

My heart melted as I listened to Shawn’s vows, my earlier panic completely melting away. He was everything I had ever wanted and more, and if this seemed too good to be true…well, that was just too bad. This was my life now, and I was going to enjoy the present instead of worrying about when the next bad thing would happen.

When we said, “I do,” the guests erupted in applause.

We sealed our vows with a kiss, and I couldn’t think of any moment I’d been this happy. Everything finally felt completely right.
