CHAPTER 29
SHAWN
“ I s it true? The experiment?” Arlene asked me, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
I’d wanted to tell her about the experiment and everything that had happened in my own time, but I also didn’t want to bring it up and guilt-trip her into being with me. I wanted it all to be organic, but now she knew and I needed to be honest with her.
“Yes, it is,” I responded.
She squeezed her eyes shut and a stray tear rolled down her cheek.
“You withstood all that pain for me and I treated you like you’d abandoned me. But I was the one who abandoned you .”
I walked up to her. “This is what I was trying to avoid, Arlene. I didn’t want you to blame yourself and think that you should have been here. I took the experimental treatment because I love you and I want to be with you.”
“You risked your life for me,” she sobbed. “For us, and I was being bitter because you didn’t check up on me.”
“You had every right to be,” I told her.
She shook her head. “No, I didn’t. I can’t even imagine what you went through.”
I swallowed. “It was a pretty dark time and I lost myself for a while, but I got what I wanted. I never forgot why I was doing it, and how much I cared about you.”
“That was risky, Shawn.”
“I couldn’t live without you. My life was pointless without you by my side. Carrying out that experiment was the only way to be with you, so it was a no-brainer.”
She walked up to me and pulled me into a hug. “I’m here for you now, and I’m not going anywhere. I never meant to cause you so much pain.”
I wrapped my arms around her. “It’s not your fault. What matters is that we’re together now. So come on, cherish me. I deserve it.”
When she pulled away from the hug, she punched me playfully on the arm.
“You’re an idiot for even going through with it,” she said, her voice filled with affection.
I chuckled. “I know. But I’m your idiot.”
She rolled her eyes playfully. “You better be.”
We both laughed, and the tension eased a bit. I leaned down and kissed her on her lips. “I’ve been a fool,” I said. “But I want to make things right. I care about you more than I’ve ever cared about anyone, and I want you. All of you, Arlene. I love you with every breath in my body.”
I watched as her eyes filled with tears. “I love you too, Shawn.”
I pulled her to me and pressed my lips to hers, leaving her completely breathless as I threaded my fingers through her hair. Without hesitating, I carried her bridal-style to my room and laid her gently on the bed, planting kisses all over her face.
We made out like we were high school kids, and our clothes slowly came off until we were naked next to each other.
My hands roamed over her, taking in every inch of her body. I’d barely touched her and she was already dripping wet.
Arlene’s head fell back as I kissed her all the way down her thighs and then back up.
“Shawn,” she gasped.
“Yes,” I breathed against her thigh as I kissed her. “I’m here, Arlene.”
I began to work my way between her legs, using my tongue, lips, and hands, making sure she was a writhing mess on my bed.
Pressure built in the pit of my stomach, and I was completely breathless as I pushed myself inside her and began to move with urgency.
I knew her body better than I’d ever known anything else. I knew how to make her squirm and moan and scream. I knew the spots that would leave her gasping for breath, and I made sure I used them.
I kept moving within her until we both exploded with each other.
“I love you so much,” I said as I pulled her to me.
“I love you too,” Arlene responded.
We spent the entire day cuddled in bed together. I’d never felt so at peace before. It was everything I’d ever wanted and more, and nothing could describe the feeling that washed over me in this moment.
