"Let me rephrase. I'm going to get you food. Do not leave this room. Hell, do not leave my bed."
"Okay," I breathe as I watch him drop his towel and replace it with a pair of boxers.
He starts for the door, but I stop him before he pulls it open.
"You walk around like that in this house often?"
"Yeah, why?" He looks down at himself confused.
"Isn't it like… always full of jersey chasers?"
"Aw, baby. Are you a little jealous?"
"N-no, I just."
"Contrary to popular belief, this house isn't full of complete dogs." I stare at him, wondering just how he's going to convince me that that statement could possibly be true. "Okay fine, it is. But only girlfriends get sleepover rights unless it's a party night."
"Riiight so—"
"Fucking chasers have to happen elsewhere every other night of the week."
I look down at his bed, grateful that at least it hasn't had a different woman in it every night of the week.
"I haven’t been with anyone for a long time, P. You don't need to worry, and you certainly don't have any competition."
I nod, not realizing just how badly I needed to hear those words from him right now.
"I'll be back. Hang tight."
I pull my knees up and look around Luca's room. It's not all that different from the one I remember from being a kid. There are discarded clothes covering the floor, the laundry basket looks to be completely empty, there's football memorabilia everywhere, trophies, posters, random pages with plays sketched on them. But the thing I love the most about it is the smell. Okay, so there might be an edge of sweaty boy in the air, but everything else is pure Luca. The one person I was always able to rely on, the one who will always rescue me, and today is no exception to that rule.
His cell buzzes on the dresser and my eyes watch as the screen goes back to sleep once more, an idea hitting me.
Sliding from the bed, I walk on shaky legs to grab it, the realization that mine is probably still on Julian's office floor in my purse where it fell makes a wave of nausea wash through me.
If Luca didn't crash into the room when he did…
I heave as I think about what would have happened next. There is no doubt in my mind that both of them would have gone through with it. They're both as sick and twisted as each other.
Knowing that makes me feel better about whatever their fate is going to be. I have no idea what Bry is capable of, I don't really know who he is, but Luca sure seems to think that Kane is dangerous.
Which is why I pull up a new web browser the second I unlock Luca's cell and type in Florida gangs.
I scan through the hits until something catches my eye.
Harrow Creek Hawks.
I know of Harrow Creek. Everyone from this part of the state does. It's the pits of hell and a place most normal people will do anything to stay away from.
I click on the website and begin reading.
I'm so lost in all the allegations of the things the gang has done over the years that I don't hear Luca come back into the room.
"Hey, found anything good?"
I have to give him a double take.
"W-what?" I ask as he places a tray full of food down on the nightstand.
