Dread curled down my spine. I knew what he meant. Dante handed me my clothing and Idressed.
I didn’t want to be naked anymore, for I suspected what wouldhappen.
Soon, Alex and Gabriel brought Paul into the garden. The sous chef struggled in theirgrip.
They tossed him down. Yellow fear radiated from him, along with sly, murkygray.
Dante stood over him, claws extending from his fingers. “Paul Allen Beaufort, you have betrayed your alpha and your pack. I sentence you todeath.”
The alpha reached down and swiped his claws across Paul’s shirt. A scream ensued, one more of rage than pain, even as blood welled up from thewounds.
“You can’t do this,” Paulscreamed.
“I won’t have to.” Dante nodded at Gabriel and Alex. “I’ll give you a two minute head start. I’ll even let you run aswolf.
He turned to Gabriel and Alex. “Two minutes you chase him in skin, then youshift.”
I saw Gabriel frown, as if he disagreed, but he finallynodded.
Paul shifted into wolf, but looked up at Dante, and then at me. He growled atme.
Dante stepped in front of me, shielding me fromview.
“Two minute warning,” Dante saidsoftly.
Paul ran. The assembled men waited watching Dante’s uplifted righthand.
He dropped it and they toreoff.
Paul didn’t stand a chance. I heard a brief scream in the distance and then snarls as the wolves ripped and tore athim.
This was the world ofshifters.
