When we woke, we realized we could feel each other as intimately as touch.
Our bond had fully formed. It was complete.

Saber
The lights were too bright, the pain in my gut intense.
Mathias, wearing black jeans and a black button up shirt with the sleeves rolled up his forearms, glowered with his arms crossed over his chest. He stood close to the side of my hospital bed as if he were my bodyguard. It would have been hilarious if I hadn’t been in labor with twins.
As it was, he could glower all he wanted. In tune through our bond, he could feel echoes of what I was going through. He was doing his best to absorb the glory mixed with trauma of birth I’d already been through once.
He did everything I asked of him: closing blinds against the glaring noon light, grabbing more pillows to stuff under my chest, feeding me ice chips, anything he could do to make me more comfortable.
Most Omegas I knew, including myself, were most comfortable giving birth on their hands and knees. When the crucial moment came, I found it most comfortable if the bed was positioned in an upright position, my knees spread like a frog’s, my arms clutching a couple of soft, spring-breeze scented pillows.
But right now, the ice was not enough to quench my thirst. Even covered by a hospital gown, I felt overly exposed. And the room smelled of too much antiseptic.
“Mathias.” I turned my head toward him and held out my hand. “Come here.”
He moved toward the head of the bed and took my hand.
“Closer.” I moaned as a contraction hit me and made my body strain, all my muscles convulsing against my will.
He moved until his thighs touched the edge of the mattress, letting me squeeze his hand as hard as I could.
When the contraction finally passed, I inched my shoulders and head closer to him, and breathed in deep. He smelled of candlelight, of smoky autumn dusks mixed with a bit of my lilac shampoo which he stole every morning, dutifully replacing it when it ran out.
“You’re a genius,” I said.
“What?” he asked.
“You. How you smell. It’s so calming.”
He smiled down at me. His free hand rubbed circles on my back.
My first time giving birth, I had done it alone. Drayden had had to work. I couldn’t be happier my second time was with someone who supported me and truly loved me.
Everything was damp between my legs, or padded. Or both. Another contraction hit. It hurt. It stretched me beyond what I thought I was capable of.
I heard the doctor come in. He spoke to me from behind. “Well, Saber, how are we doing?”
The contractions were rapidly coming one after the other now.
“We are ready to push these guys out now!” I squeezed out the words through gritted teeth.
Mathias kept hold of my hand and continued to pet my back.
I felt the doctor lift my gown and probe me with gentle, gloved fingers.
“I think you’re ready now. I’m going to ask you to push. It will be soon, I promise, and then this will be all over.”
“Fuck yes!”
Mathias patted me on my back.
“You go on doing that for him,” the doctor instructed Mathias. “A little lower. It will help.”
