“I see that.”
“They save the world,” said Luke softly.
“That’s wonderful. It’s good to save the world sometimes.”
“All the time,” Tybor insisted.
“All the time,” I echoed in agreement. All of a sudden my heart clenched again at the memory that I had said the worst thing possible to Saber—that Tybor should be sent away to a chattel farm.
I was not the good guy. I never had been. Saber had forgiven me, but could I forgive myself?
Chapter Twelve
Saber
I couldn’t help but watch the clock.
When the cartoon was over, I said to my twins, “Go get into your PJs and brush your teeth. I’ll be in in a minute.”
“Can we stay up a little bit, Daddy?” asked Luke.
“Not tonight.
It was funny how quickly they could move when they wanted to watch a movie, but how much they dragged their bodies when they were told to go and prepare for bed.
When Mathias and I were alone, I expected the awkwardness to resume between us. Instead, Mathias turned to me, his features softened more than I thought possible, and said, “You’re really good with them.”
“My boys are everything to me.”
“I see that.” He lifted his lips in a small but gorgeous smile. “Admirable.”
“It’s just called being a parent.”
“But not all parents know how to be parents.”
“True.” I stood, stretching a little, hands self-consciously going to the small bump of my stomach. “I have to go see to them. I’ll be back in a few minutes. Watch the TV or whatever you want.”
I confess I rather hurried the boys through their bedtime routine. I didn’t feel guilty, though. I’d been lonely for too long since way before Drayden passed. I wanted a pleasant evening with an Alpha I was attracted to. I deserved it.
But I still felt my pregnancy might get in the way. I was in shape, but my usual flat belly was gone. It still had firmness, it was just rounder now. Would he notice? Would he care?
Nerves, excitement, apprehension and wonder all vied for top space in my brain.
When the boys were down and their door closed, I walked back into the living room where Mathias sat idly channel surfing. He switched the TV off when I approached. The room dimmed.
I sat down next to him and said, “I’m glad you stayed.”
“Are you?”
I frowned. “I asked you, didn’t I?”
“I am probably not the man you are looking for for anything meaningful.” His eyes lowered showing long lashes which made shadows on his proud cheekbones.
“When did I say I was? And besides, you wouldn’t presume to tell me what I’m looking for, would you?”
“No. But I’m a little fucked up and--”
“Who isn’t?” I interrupted. Drayden had been one fucked up Alpha. He couldn’t be soft. He had to prove himself and work all the time. His Burns were like chores for him to get through, when I thought they should have brought us more intimacy, made us closer.
