“I don’t want to talk about that time. I hated Kris, okay? But maybe now I don’t so much. I was a stupid kid.” In many ways, I still was. If I were to be honest, I didn’t really like myself after what had gone on with Kris, and after Father chose me as his second favorite. It dug a deep wound.Second best.I hated it. Trigg never cared about that stuff, but he’d never been competitive like I was. I was so damned competitive I’d cheat to get ahead.
So now what did that make me at thirty, working for Father in a name position only, living in luxury I barely earned, not to mention being an Alpha who couldn’t knot?
I was a failure and that was that.
My last Burn had pissed me off. I’d felt so little with the Omega who serviced me and I wanted more.
Well, I always wanted more. I was a brat prick that way.
I heard Trigg say softly, “I just wish you’d talk to me.”
“I am talking to you. This is what’s called talking.”
“Yeah,” he said. “I can see your mouth moving, but I don’t hear it saying a damn thing.”
I pressed my palm to my forehead. Some of my hair came away from my severe hairstyle—the braid—and wisped across my temple.
“Maybe we need a vacation from all this,” Trigg suggested when I didn’t say anything.
It wasn’t the locale that made me miserable. But I shrugged. “Where to this time?”
“Skiing or swimming? Fishing or hang gliding?”
I said nothing.
“White water rafting? Meditation seminar? Monastery with a vow of silence? Science fiction convention?”
“I’ll think about it,” I said. But all I could really think about was the dinner tomorrow at Saber’s house. I wondered what he might cook. I wondered if he was thinking about it, too.
“I wish you would tell me what’s on your mind,” Trigg said.
“I guess I’m just tired.”
“Acting like an old man already?” Trigg snickered.
“Yeah, well, time flies, right?”
“Dude, don’t be a stranger, okay.”
I nodded.
“Text you tomorrow,” he said.
“I’m sure you will,” I replied.
He cut the line.
Chapter Ten
Saber
“You boys must be on your best behavior,” I said, brushing Tybor’s pale hair from his eyes. “Mister Vandergale is coming over again today and he has some very important papers for me.”
“Daddy, is that man helping us?” asked Tybor.
“Yes, he is.”
“Good. He’s very big and tall and sometimes he looks mean, but he’s not. I can tell. I like him.”
