I prepared lunch and put it in the fridge to keep until lunchtime.
Listening to my children play, I went to the couch in the far alcove of the dining room and sat down, turning and putting my feet up.
Next thing I knew, I was jerking awake when I heard Tybor crying.
I sat up, dizzy for a moment. “Ty baby?”
My kids were standing in front of me. Tybor had tears on his cheeks and Luke stood next to him with his head down.
“Luke hit me.” He held out his arm pointing to his wrist. “Right here.”
“Did not!” Luke protested, his eyes filling with tears.
“Come here, you two.”
They stepped forward.
I gently took Tybor’s arm in my hand and kissed his wrist. “There. Boo-boo healed.”
He sniffled.
I looked at Luke. “Now, what happened? Did you hit Tybor?”
“It was a assident.”
“An accident?” I said slowly.
He nodded vigorously.
“Ty? Was it?”
“I guess he didn’t mean to. We were playing ball and he tried to get it from me.”
“So it was a game,” I said. I brought them both into a hug. “Only a game. And everything is okay.”
“Daddy. We’re hungry. Is it lunch yet?” they asked in unison.
I grabbed my phone from my pocket and saw I’d slept about half an hour. I never did that! I sighed.
“Sure, boys. I have lunch all ready.”
I sighed. I loved them deeply, but sometimes I got tired of the routines. Of talking to five year olds all day long. I went online sometimes for adult conversation but it wasn’t enough.
Mathias had been perhaps more important company than I realized. I looked for any message from him but found none. If I didn’t hear from him by the end of the day, I vowed I’d message him myself.
The kids filled the room with their energy, but somehow I felt empty, listless, aimless. I sent a mental message toward my phone. Please call.
It remained silent.
The kids bounced to their seats at the table. I got out their sandwiches and fruit and drinks and set it all up for them. I made myself some food as well, but I wasn’t hungry.
I managed to eat half of my lunch while still staring at my silent phone.
“Daddy,” Tybor said, his mouth full.
“Swallow before speaking,” I gently reprimanded.
He made a big gulping sound, then said, “Is that big man who is helping us coming back?”
