Page 86 of See You Soon
“You’re nuts. I’d take advantage in a heartbeat.”
“Even if I wanted to, it’s not an option for me. The money is my stepmother’s not mine, and as you saw, we’re not exactly on friendly terms.”
“Stepmother?” Skye’s eyes widened. “She’s so young! I thought you were joking the other day.”
“Yeah.”
“But—”
“I really don’t want to get into it. Suffice to say, it’s best I keep my distance. Apparently, her sons will be on the lot, though. So, in case Matt says something ugly, I just wanted you to understand where it was coming from.”
“Fair enough. He won’t be the only douchebag here. It’s a movie studio. I’m pretty sure the electricity is run off of over-inflated egos.”
After Cara finished cleaning the trailer, she and Skye collected Jerrod from wardrobe, and they walked over to craft services to grab a snack.
“So, what was your delivery?” Jerrod asked as he pulled apart the cellophane on his honeybun.
“Oh, yeah! What was it?” Skye asked.
“Flowers.”
She rolled her eyes when Jerrod and Skye chorused, “OOOO!”
“Have you been holding out on us? Are you dating someone? Do tell!” Jerrod cupped his hand to his ear.
“It’s Wes, right? I knew something was going on with you two! That sexual tension… chef’s kiss.” Skye kissed her fingertips.
“No!” Cara exclaimed, but her face heated as a vision of Wes’s eyes heavy with want, just before his lips descended on her breasts, appeared in front of her.
“Says the woman, a gorgeous shade of pink,” Jerrod said around a mouthful of pastry.
“Definitely not,” she insisted.
“So, who were they from then?” Jerrod asked.
She shrugged, “I’m not sure. I was late getting back, and I forgot to look at the card.”
Her friends exchanged a look. It was true. Trey had distracted her, and then Skye called over the radio.
“Well, where are they now?”
“In my car.”
Jerrod looked scandalized. “They’ll die! Go get them. I’ll keep them with me until the end of the day. No one is sending me roses. I’d at least appreciate them.” He sniffed.
As she took the cart to her car again, Cara told herself that she was only doing it to appease her friends—who she essentially worked for—but part of her had allowed the idea that maybe Weshadsent them to infiltrate her brain. It would be a joke, of course, because of the anonymous flowers yesterday. But after yesterday…
Butterflies took flight in her stomach. No!She mentally swatted them down.
After unlocking her car door, she pulled the flowers out and set them on the golf cart’s seat. They were identical to the ones she had received the day before, down to the same style crystal vase. However, this bouquet had a simple, white envelope stuffed into it with her first name typed across the front. Maybe whoever sent it yesterday realized they’d forgotten a message, and this was a do over. The white card inside had a simple message typed across it:
My darling, I can’t wait.
Wait for what? She turned the card over, looking for any sign of who had sent it. But there was nothing to identify, not even the florist it came from.
When she reached the wardrobe warehouse, she put the heavy vase on Jerrod’s desk next to his scissors and pins.
“Damn!” Jerrod goggled at the large arrangement. “You must have been averygood girl.”
