“From what?” Declan looked bewildered.
“Becoming Courtney won’t be nearly as challenging. If I carry an ID with my picture on it, I won’t have to be identical, only similar. They already have the paperwork, so I should be able to just go in, hand them the ID, and give the pin number.”
Declan was clearly unconvinced.
“People believe what they are presented with,” Cara asserted. “Why would they be looking for a problem?”
“There is a reason people use these high security vaults. Their reputation is everything. They aren’t just going to take your word for it.”
“But they will think I’m Courtney, coming back now that I’ve found the pin. Besides,” Cara adopted a haughty tone. “I can play rich bitch as well as the next socialite.” Declan’s lips twitched. “Can you get a fake ID with my new face on it?”
“Yes.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “This is a bad idea. If you get arrested, the boys will eviscerate me.”
“If I get arrested, you’ll get me out.”
Wes looked worried for the first time. “Do you think that’s likely? They’d arrest her, instead of hushing it up?”
“No,” Cara insisted.
“Maybe I should go with her. I could pose as one of her sons,” Wes suggested.
“Ewww!”
“We don’t know who went with her before. Just that it was a man. It’s too big a risk to impersonate two people. Let me make some calls.”
“In the meantime, I’m going shopping!” Cara crowed.
CHAPTERFIFTY-ONE
The theatrical supplyhouse proved easy to locate, and Wes held the shopping basket while Cara gushed over the different products she found.
“Skye is going to die! This stuff is so impossible to get!” she said, dropping several tubes in the basket. She referred to her phone several times, where she was carrying on a text conversation with Skye.
“Skye says the latex cheek pads will work best to soften my jawline… I guess the swelling will do some good after all.” She looked up and wrinkled her nose. “Courtney looks phenomenal for her age but still…” Wes suspected Cara was getting a little enjoyment out of dissecting her stepmother’s looks. After the misery the woman had put Cara and her family through, a little mental payback was deserved.
“I’m sure she’ll get surgery soon,” Cara mused. “There’s only so much diet can do. Genetics gets you every time, and she’s getting a little jowly, and the bags under her eyes…”
Wes looked at her skeptically. “Don’t get carried away. The woman may be Medusa on the inside, but she’s still extremely attractive.”
Cara scowled at him but put back a few of the pads. “You’re right.”
“What did you tell Skye? She’s met Courtney. She must have questions, and the fewer people who know, the less likely you are to get in trouble later.”
“I said I was working on a project for my brother. I sent her some close-up photos of the nose and jawline, but I don’t need help with the hair or aging around the eyes, thanks to the practice I got from the movie. It would be easier if her nose were narrower, then I could contour. Skye didn’t recognize the pictures, and I promised to fill her in when I get back.”
After Cara had found everything she thought she needed, they stepped out into the icy drizzle.
“Speaking of when we get back.”
Cara’s eyes flit to his.
Wes cleared his throat. “You know, I was only staying in the house while I was house hunting. I never intended on staying in that house for a long time.”
Cara halted on the sidewalk, her fingers turning white where they clutched the bag.
“I know now isn’t the time to talk about it. With so much going on…”
“You’re moving out.” Cara wouldn’t look him in the eye.
