Page 42 of See You Soon
“It’s perfectly safe. Not to mention, a little tasty.”
Wes squinted, bending close to her face, his clean scent reaching through the citrus. He gingerly reached out a finger, stopping just before it touched her cheek. Her stomach swooped. What was wrong with her? This is not a sexy moment!
“What’s that yellow stuff?”
Cara batted his finger away. “I told you. It’s pineapple.”
“And why did you make a fruit snack on your face?”
“Because it’s good for my skin. I’m trying out a new ratio.” She tilted her head pretending to inspect his skin. “Wouldn’t hurt you to try it. It would take care of those dry spots where you use that terrible shaving gel.”
Wes rubbed a hand over his jaw. “I don’t have dry spots.”
Cara arched a brow. “If you say so. You know, just because you like to hibernate like a computer bear, only taking breaks to run—in the sun without sunscreen.” She gave an exaggerated shudder. “Doesn’t mean your skin isn’t taking a beating. You won’t always be this attractive. Particularly when you’re covered in brown spots and wrinkles.”
“But you think I’m attractive now?”
His eyes suddenly dipped to her breasts, his pupils flaring. Expecting to be alone, Cara hadn’t bothered with a bra, and by the flush on Wes’s face, he’d noticed. Cara felt the energy pulse between them and was grateful the thick mixture hid the heat she felt rising on her cheeks.
“Don’t get too excited,” she managed to say. “I’m in the beauty business. I can objectively recognize symmetrical features and appreciate how yours are put together.”
“How they are put together?” he echoed, lips twitching, but his eyes came up to meet hers.
Cara knew he was laughing at her, but it didn’t bother her. He knew he was handsome, and they’d both know she was lying if she denied it.
“They are put together nicely, but…” She pursed her lips pretending to concentrate. “If you don’t start taking care of those problem spots. There, and there.” Cara waved her hand at Wes’s smooth skin.
She grinned when he tentatively touched where she had pointed.
“I don’t have problem spots!”
Cara reached for the spoon.
“What are you doing?”
“Nothing.” She widened her eyes innocently.
Wes leaned back. “Don’t even… Oh my god!” He exclaimed as the cold mixture hit his cheek. His nose wrinkled. “I can’t believe you just did that.”
Cara grinned. “Don’t pout. Let me practice.”
Wes grimaced. “Do I have to wear one of those?” He gestured at the terry cloth headband.
Cara screwed her mouth to the side and nodded with mock seriousness. “I think it’s best.”
Wes’s eyes were full of laughter when they met hers. “I can’t believe…”
Cara bounded up and raced to her room for supplies. Before Wes knew what was happening, she had him seated on a towel, a pink headband pushing his hair back.
The phone’s alarm went off. “Don’t move,” she commanded, before racing away again. She quickly rinsed off her mask, worried Wes would leave before she came back. She eyed her bra lying on the bed.
She should put it on.
No reason for temptation.
She kept walking.
Cara was still blotting her face with a washcloth, when she saw he hadn’t moved. A happy warmth spread through her.
