Page 44 of See You Soon
The doorbell rang, startling them both.
“Are you expecting someone?” she asked with a frown.
Wes shook his head and bolted for the bedroom. Cara almost fell over when the door opened, revealing her brother taking up most of the doorway.
“Luke?”
“Surprise!” He looked over her head into the house. “You mentioned you weren’t working today, and I had a meeting with a client nearby, so I thought I’d stop in and see where you live. Since you’ve never invited me before,” he added archly.
For good reason she thought. She never told her family that she was living with Wes. Not that theyshouldobject. She was a grown woman after all, but… She knew her brothers, and they were frequently unreasonable. Sometimes being the little sister sucked.
“Cara?” His brows came down in a frown when she put her hands wide to block the doorway. “Move.”
She sighed, stepping back. Maybe Wes would stay in his room. Luke paced into the single common room glancing at the kitchen, his expression lightening.
“It’s cute. Where’s your room?”
Cara pointed to her doorway, but Luke’s attention was caught by the frozen image of the television. “I didn’t know you liked Star Trek.”
“You’ve seen it?”
Luke looked at her like she was insane. “Of course! Everyone has seen it.”
“That’s what I said.” Wes’s deep voice sounded behind them, and Luke’s head swiveled from her to Wes and back again before a slick smile appeared. Cara groaned inwardly. She recognized his cross-examination face.
He stepped forward extending his hand to Wes. “I’m Luke, Cara’s brother.”
“Wes Evans. Cara’s told me a lot about you.”
“Really?” Luke dramatically lifted his eyebrows. “She hasn’t mentioned you—at all.”
“He’s Melody’s friend,” Cara blurted out. “He’s staying here while he house hunts.”
“And where’s Melody?” Luke looked pointedly around the room. “I was looking forward to meeting her.”
“She’s out,” Cara said, sending a silent message to Wes. “Did you want to see my room?”
Luke looked back suspiciously at Wes, but Cara grabbed his hand and towed him to her bedroom. The room was small, and the tour consisted of Luke standing in the doorway and looking around. Thankfully, when they were done, Wes had disappeared back into his bedroom, the door closed.
Luke stared at the door for a moment but didn’t make any further comment. Cara exhaled. “Don’t you think you should invite me to dinner?”
Luke grimaced. “Sorry, Car-Bear, I have an event tonight. I just wanted to check in on you.” He jerked a thumb at the door. “What do you know about him.”
“Wes?” She kept her tone breezy. “He’s really nice.”
“What does he do? Where does he work?”
“Luke,” Cara groused.
“Should I ask him?” He took a step in the direction of the kitchen, and Cara caught his arm.
“He owns a cybersecurity company. He’s harmless. Honestly, just a nice guy. He’s interested in Melody.”
She didn’t think her brother would appreciate the fact that, just before he arrived, she had been thinking about getting Wes naked and enacting some of the fantasies she’d been indulging in lately.
Luke pulled her into a hug and kissed the top of her head. “Don’t be mad, Car-Bear. I’m allowed to worry.”
Cara hugged him back. “I know and I’m being careful. Promise.”
