Story: Romancing the Rake

CHAPTER NINE

Ambrose called on Desdemona the following day.

Since she was receiving with her aunt and her Grace, he made sure to bring two small nosegays for the older ladies as well as a white orchid for Des.

He thought she would enjoy the drama of such an exotic flower.

Her surprised smile and sparkling eyes proved it was worth the effort.

Lord Silvers,” Des said softly, “won’t you please join us?” She gestured to one of the open chairs in the group of young people and gave the flowers to a waiting servant before pouring a cup of tea for Ambrose.

“Thank you, Miss Oldstone,” he said the chair across from her.

He glanced around the room as the rest of the introductions were made then took the cup from Desdemona with a wink.

“I apologize for not sending a note, but I found myself in the area and took the chance that you would be receiving this afternoon.”

“A lucky day for you, my lord,” one of the young ladies said, fluttering her fan. “And for us as well,” she added, batting her lashes at him. The two young gentlemen rolled their eyes at her obviousness.

Another young lady asked, “I did not realize you knew Miss Oldstone, as she is so new to town.”

“We were introduced by her cousin, Lord Montverre.” he said clearly, knowing he needed to establish their acquaintance to the others.

The ton were sticklers for propriety and any slip up would hurt Des and her family.

“I was hoping to invite Miss Oldstone to the theatre tomorrow evening, with her cousin, of course.”

Desdemona smiled widely, then turned first to Montverre then to her aunt. Lady Gail nodded. “I suppose that would be fine,” she replied, giving Ambrose a quick grin. She then said, “Desdemona, why not show all of your new friends the gardens? My roses are in perfect bloom now.”

“Of course,” Des replied, fluffing her skirts out just so. Ambrose stepped to her side and offered his arm with a wink. Tucking her hand into his elbow, she led them into the gardens.
