Silvia nodded. “But he’s not a woman.”
“Do you love him?”
She seemed to think about it before nodding. “I’m just not sure what kind of love I feel for him.”
“Okay. Do you ever lust after him? Does his body turn you on?”
“He has great hair,” Silvia said before laughing at herself. “And I do like his chest. His hands are nice too. I don’t know. He’s definitely handsome. We’ve even messed around a little.”
“How did that go?”
“It felt good,” Silvia said with a flush.
Keisha wanted more details but only went for the most important. “Were you into him when messing around?”
Silvia shook her head in confusion.
“Did you focus on him while it happened? Or were you fantasizing about someone else?”
“I was mostly thinking about how it felt.”
“Hmm. Have you ever seen him naked?”
Silvia laughed. “He’s offered to show me a few times.”
Keisha shrugged. “Take him up on it.”
“What?”
“Why not? That’s one way of figuring out if you’re into women. Process of elimination.”
Silvia seemed conflicted. “I don’t want to use him.”
“Sounds to me like he already volunteered. And judging from the way my brothers talk, I don’t think he’ll mind.” She watched Silvia struggle with the idea. “Or you can break up with him and experiment with me.”
“You’re trouble,” Silvia said while resisting a smile.
“I could be,” Keisha said. “If the stars align. Until they do…” She stood, needing to burn off some nervous energy. “Why don’t you show me around?”
“There isn’t much to see,” Silvia said, but she gave her a tour anyway.
Aside from the room she shared with her brother, the trailer had a master bedroom and two small bathrooms. Not bad for a family of four.
“That’s it,” Silvia said when they ended up back in the living room. “Aside from the garden out back.”
“I have to see it,” Keisha said. “You mentioned growing food, which makes you the competition. Hartland Farms might have to shut you down. Or buy you out.”
“Send us an offer, we won’t mind,” Silvia said while fetching her coat.
Keisha followed her outside. She expected to see a few planter boxes and maybe lattice for tomato vines to climb. The first thing she noticed was repurposed items, like a rusty old fishing boat and a couple of barrels that had been sawed in half, all of them filled with soil. Her favorite was the porcelain white toilet, which gleamed in the sunshine.
“You forgot the ‘house’ part of an outhouse,” she quipped.
“That was my dad’s idea,” Silvia explained. “He grows something different in it each year. He started with a sunflower and managed a stalk of corn most recently.”
“Impressive,” Keisha said, nodding her approval. “I might have to steal his technique for our farm. Of course we’d need thousands of toilets. An entire acre filled with them, stretching as far as the eye can see.”
Silvia laughed. “I’ll have to tell him that. He’ll love the idea.”
