Page 2 of One Night

Ding. Ding.

I look down and notice the gas light is flashing.

“Fuck.” I sigh. “Why didn’t I just fill up earlier. At least I’ve made it to town, and the cabin is another twenty minutes out.”

Just as I get ready to pass a neon lime green sign that reads “Daisy’s Diner,” I notice a small sign in the window that shows a gas pump and an arrow.

“Thank the heavens,” I say, with a smile, before turning into the parking lot.

I pull up next to one of the two pumps this place has, before shifting into park and turning off the engine.

Stepping out, I’m hit with a scent of pine and woods.

It's fitting given that I’m surrounded by trees.

Walking into the small shack of a store, I look around before doing a little shopping for snacks and drinks.

Once I’ve gathered everything, I head to the front to check out and notice there isn’t anyone around.

Looking down, I see a small silver bell and tap it.

“I’ll be a second. Have a look around!” A man’s voice shouts from the back.

Looking around, I spot a magazine rack and look through it before settling on a gossip one. After a few moments, I hear boots and turn to see a young guy with dark brown eyes and a shaved head.

“Sorry for the wait.” He smiles.

“No worries. I also need forty on pump two, please.” I respond.

“Yeah, sure. I haven’t seen you around here before. You new to town?” He asks, licking his lips.

“Uh, kind of. I’m just here for a week before passing through. Speaking of, my signal went out, and I am hoping I’m on the right path.” I state.

“Where ya headed? Maybe I can help.” He responds.

“Jasper’s Cabin of-” Before I can finish, he answers.

“Yeah, it’s about a fifteen-minute drive further up.”

“Thanks,” I say. “What’s my total?”

“Any friend of Jasp’s is a friend of mine.” He smiles, but this time it seems more predatory.

“Uh, are you sure?” I ask, this is awkward.

“You’re Belinda’s sister, right?”

“Yeah,” I reply.

“Enjoy your stay.” He smirks.

After my encounter with who I’ve learned is Jasper’s friend, Brian, I finally make it to the cabin. Getting everything put away, I send a text to my sister.

I made it.

This place is amazing.

Bee:

Eek! Enjoy!

I’ll see you in a few days.

Yeah. Yeah.

Oh and I met Brian.

Bee:

Who?

Jasper’s friend by Daisy’s Diner.

Bee:

Jasp might. He’s from there.

I haven’t met all his friends yet.

Oh

Well, he let me grab gas and snacks.

Bee:

Love u 2 sis

I sit my phone on the small table. Guess it’s time to get settled in.

After my small tour of the house, I showered, heated up one of the stir-fry meals from the freezer, and watched some tv. After about an hour, I head back into the bedroom, climb into bed, and fall asleep.
