Never fucking enough where my Savannah is concerned.
My queen of hearts.
My future.
EPILOGUE TWO
SAVANNAH
Five years later
Seated on the couch in the living room, I smile when the press of warm lips on the top of my head brings me back from my racing thoughts.
“You look worried,” Robbie says, leaning over me from behind with his big hands on my shoulders, forever my steady presence.
I close the book on my lap and place my hand atop his, tipping my chin up for a kiss.
He leans down and tastes me softly before nipping at my bottom lip to make me smile. “What worries you, beautiful?”
“You’re home early from work,” I reply, avoiding the topic.
Robbie knows me too well.
Searching my face, he lets his gaze flick to my mouth as a slight frown mars his forehead. He straightens up, rounds the couch, and crouches down in front of me with his hands braced on my knees. “Talk to me, baby.”
Worrying my bottom lip, I study the new lines around his eyes and the flecks of gray in his hair. I sit forward, running myfingers through the short strands, and he turns his head to kiss my palm.
“What if we pass our genetics on to our baby.”
He looks at me, and the fire I see there has me sucking in a breath.
He kisses my palm one final time, then puts his hands on my rounded belly and leans in close, so close his breath heats my lips. “We will love this baby, Savannah. He or she will never feel fear the way we did.” Rubbing his thumbs over my skin through my dress, he presses his forehead to mine. “I was a broken man. The things I did—” He swallows, closing his eyes briefly before catching mine again. “I lost twenty years of my life because of the sickness inside me. You saved me, Savannah. If it weren’t for you, I’d be dead now.” He lifts his hand from my stomach and palms the side of my head, bunching my hair up in his hand. He jostles me softly to emphasize his point. “You saved me.”
“I’ve killed people,” I whisper weakly.
“We both have. Fuck…if anyone hurts you again, I’ll gladly torture them to death. Don’t think for a second that I won’t chop them into pieces, because I will. Every. Single. Time.” He palms the side of my head with his free hand and looks at me with those piercing blue eyes that shine with something other than darkness these days. “Our baby will grow up loved and safe. We will raise him or her to be a good person. We will give him or her the tools they need to walk through life.”
“Do you think you were born this way?” I ask him as the baby kicks inside me.
I’m hormonal.
I’m a mess.
“I don’t know, baby,” he replies honestly, pressing a kiss to my cheek. “I don’t think I was. But guess what?” He jostles me again, making me smile despite the tears clinging to my lashes.“It doesn’t matter. Those sixteen years in prison changed me. And then you happened. You silence the voices inside me.”
“And you silence mine,” I reply, making him smile.
“Damn right. We’re each other’s light in the darkness.” His eyes soften, and he brushes away my stray tears with his thumb. “You’re going to be a good mom.”
“You sound so sure.”
“I know you will.”
His lips capture mine, his tongue invading my mouth and easing my worries.
I respond in earnest, pulling him to me by his neck and kissing him back, loving the masculine sound rumbling in his chest.
“You’re going to be an amazing father,” I breathe between kisses, feeling him smile against my lips.
