Will’s gone. A pang of disappointment hits me. More than ever, I can’t deny how much I want him.
He clearly wants me too, but I’m pretty sure he’s never going to let himself have me.
I sigh, leaning against the island. I love what I have with Owen and Miles. That has to be enough. It has to be.
Perfectly timed when I need the distraction, Lyla comes downstairs with the decorations in hand.
CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
Will
Birthdays as an adultare so much different than when you’re a kid. During those early birthdays, it feels as if the entire universe revolves around you for that one day out of the year.
At least, that’s the way my parents always made it feel for us.
Now as an adult, it’s just a day where you tack on another year to your tally. I prefer it this way, though. I’ve never been one for having the attention on me.
Swinging open the front door, I’m hit with an explosion of color and everyone shouting, “Surprise!”
And by everyone, I mean Lyla, Avery, Miles, and my parents. Owen is standing there, too, but I’m pretty sure he remained his quiet, surly self.
I barely have time to set everything in my hands down on the entry table before Lyla jumps up into my arms.
“Happy birthday,” she says, wrapping her arms around my neck.
We had an early shipment coming in this morning, so this is the first time I’ve seen her today. I hug her tightly to me, breathing in her strawberry scent.
“Thank you,” I say.
She drags me into the kitchen to show me the German chocolate cake she and Avery made for me. My mouth instantly waters. That’s my favorite dessert.
If I know my niece at all, this little celebration was mostly her idea.
Distracted, Lyla darts off to play with the balloons scattered around the floor.
I slide to my right, so I’m next to Avery. We’re so close if either of us moves even the slightest bit, I’ll get to feel her pressed against me.
My mind wanders to the night I came home early and found her fucking my brothers. Seeing her fall apart as pleasure completely wrecked her was the single hottest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.
I wasn’t even mad that Miles and Owen were the ones making her feel that way. I just wanted to play a small piece in bringing her pleasure.
The plea in her eyes was clear. She wanted me to step over that invisible line that’s always drawn taut between us.
I couldn’t do it. Instead, I walked—or rather ran—away.
My cock was harder than it has ever been. It took jacking off twice in the shower to get the damn thing to behave.
Just thinking about it now has me sporting a semi in my pants. Luckily, we’re standing at the island, so no one will be able to see.
“How did you know that was my favorite?” I ask her, gesturing toward the cake.
She peeks up at me, eyes sparkling. “A little bird might have told me.”
My mom walks by us with an armful of plates. “Chirp, chirp,” she says, without turning to even look our way.
I snort out a laugh, bracing my hands against the counter in front of me. Avery starts laughing just as hard. Her head falls against my shoulder.
“That was funny,” she snorts.
