CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Miles

Walking into the house,I kick my shoes off at the door. I can usually pinpoint where Avery and Lyla are when I get home, but it’s silent today.

Then movement out the back door catches my eye. I see a flash of Lyla’s bright pink swimsuit as she sprints across the grass.

Stepping closer to the glass, I freeze. Avery’s in a black bikini that makes my mouth water. It’s modest for a bikini, but it’s still sexy as fuck.

She chases after Lyla, both jumping through the sprinkler they have running in the middle of the lawn.

Water droplets bead on her skin, sliding down… down… down. I want to lick each and every one of them off her.

I groan, running my hand over my face. What is this woman doing to me?

Needing to be closer, I quietly ease the door open. Avery has her back to me, but Lyla spots me right away. I hold my finger up to my lips, silently begging her not to tell Avery I’m here.

I try to be as silent as I can, padding across the grass in my socked feet. When I’m within arm’s reach, I spring forward. My arms band around Avery’s middle, swinging her in a circle.

She lets out a terrified scream before settling into a fit of laughter. “What the… heck?” she says, leaning back into me when I set her feet back on the ground.

She spins around in my arms, which are still wrapped around her. “You scared the crap out of me.”

“Worth it,” I say, reluctantly letting her go. I turn toward Lyla. “Having fun?”

She bobs her head up and down. “Yep…”

I laugh, rubbing my hand over her wet hair on the top of her head.

She takes off running, Avery and I hot on her heels. Pretty soon, I’m soaked. I should have probably changed out of my clothes before running around with them in the water, but I couldn’t care less right now.

I tap Lyla on the shoulder. “Want to help me get Avery?” I whisper.

Lyla nods, a big smile on her face.

I spin around, so she can hop up on my back.

“We’re coming for you, Aves,” Lyla shouts, wrapping her arms around my neck.

Holding on tight to her legs, I take off toward Avery. She lets out a half-laugh, half-shriek as she runs through the sprinkler to the opposite side of the yard.

Lyla’s laughing so hard, I think she’s going to let go and fall off my back. I pick up my pace, closing the distance.

With one hand holding Lyla in place, I wrap the other around Avery. We all tumble to the ground.

I make sure to fall on my side and do my best to keep them safe, taking the brunt of the fall myself.

“Got you,” Lyla says, leaning over my shoulder.

“You did,” Avery says, grinning at Lyla from where she’s cradled against my chest.

Lyla squirms away from me, moving to stand. “Can I go get a snack?”

“Sure,” I mumble, unable to take my eyes off the beautiful woman in my arms.

“And a juice box?” Lyla asks, still standing over us.

“You can have two,” Avery says, which makes me laugh.
