Page 23 of Lady Emily’s Matchmaking Mishap (Merry Spinsters, Charming Rogues #5)

Dear Fenn,

You are right—I am ashamed to admit that I do not have any shoes. My feet grow so quickly, and Papa cannot afford to buy shoes for us all the time, for they are quite dear. Besides, Cissy needs them more than I do. Truly, it is no great hardship, for I rather enjoy running barefoot.

Your faithful barefoot friend,

Little Wren

Dear Little Wren,

This will not do.

Winter is fast approaching, and no one—least of all you—should be running about without shoes. I cannot bear the thought of you braving the cold with bare feet.

A little rain never hurt anyone, but that doesn’t mean you must face every storm unprepared.

Enclosed is a pair of boots. Please wear them.

Your faithful Forest Fay,

Fenn

My dearest, dearest Forest Fay,

Oh, Fenn!

The boots! They are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen! How can I possibly accept such a gift? It seems far too generous. Yet, I cannot stop staring at them. I am quite in love with them already.

And my pomona green stockings—how splendid they look with the boots! I vow I shall wear them every day, sleep in them, and never take them off!

Your friend forever,

Little Wren

P.S. I have enclosed a drawing for you as a thank you!
