“Well, there you go. If you can start tomorrow night, that would be great. If you have to wait two weeks, then we’ll just have to wait two weeks. Either way, say yes. We need you.”
Unlike Ben, who wanted nothing to do with me after he got what he wanted.
I glanced up at the windows of the radio station on the second floor, deep in thought.
At that moment, I couldn’t think of one single reason why I would want to wait it out to see what happened with the new owners of the radio station.
Ben did what was best for him and I needed to do what was best for me.
The offer from Doug was a sure thing.
I had to protect myself.
I let out a deep breath and nodded. “Okay, Doug. I accept your offer.”
Chapter Twenty-Four
BEN
After chatting with Dan about the staff meeting and the job offer in San Francisco, I left his office and looked around for Lori, wondering where she disappeared to. I opened the door to the main production studio and peeked inside.
The production director, Carlos, swiveled around in his chair. “Hi, Ben. What’s up?”
“Have you seen Lori?”
Carlos shook his head. “Not since the meeting, no. Hey, don’t forget you need to record that commercial for Isola Pizza Bar before you leave today.”
I nodded. “Can we do it now, really quick?”
“Of course.” He reached over and grabbed the sixty-second copy from the top of his production inbox, handing it to me. “Step up to the mic when you’re ready.”
I read through it twice and then stepped up to the microphone, ready to voice it.
“Okay—we’re recording,” Carlos said. “Anytime you’re ready.”
I read right through the commercial, one take and no issues. “How was the time on that?”
He smiled. “Exactly sixty seconds. Perfect.”
“Great.” I handed the paper back to Carlos. “What are the odds of you staying on with the new owners?”
Carlos nodded. “Pretty good, I think. They have to have a production director and I’m already familiar with everything around here. We’ll see, but I’m feeling confident about it. What about you?”
“Just between you and me, Steve took me aside before the meeting and told me the new owners wanted to talk with me and Lori, and that they would be contacting us soon, which is a good sign.”
“Yes, it is.”
“That’s why I was looking for Lori. I’ll catch you later.”
“Sounds good.”
I left the production studio and walked down the hallway, continuing my search for Lori. She knew we were going to chat, so she couldn’t have left yet.
“Ben!” Kyle called out from his office. “We need to talk.”
That didn’t sound good.
I entered his office and stood behind one of the chairs across from him. “What’s up?”
