Chapter twenty-five

Sisters

Dane

“ H ello?” I answer my phone as I make my way to the soccer fields after school.

“Well, well, well, if it isn’t my wayward brother.”

“Hi, Jenny,” I greet my sister with a smile.

“Do you know how hard you’ve been to get ahold of lately?”

“Well, you’ve got me now. So, how about you quit giving me shit?”

“Okay, fine. But really, what’s going on? I feel like I talked to you more when you were in the Marines. Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m good,” I say. “I’ve just been busy with the move and with the new job–trying to carve out my place here. Oh, and I took a job as the soccer coach.”

She chortles. “What the hell do you know about soccer?”

“More than I did a week ago.” Before she can give me too much shit, I add, “I’m actually on my way to practice now, so is there a reason for your call?”

“I wanted to talk to you about Dad.”

“What about him?” I ask, realizing this conversation may not be as short as I hoped.

“Did you know he has a girlfriend?”

“I know he said he has a lady friend he hangs out with.”

“Oh, it’s much more than that, Dane. He’s got a fuck buddy.”

That gets me to stop walking. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

“No, I don’t think I did hear you. You can’t possibly know that. I know he didn’t discuss that with you, Jenny.”

“He didn’t have to tell me.” She pauses before exclaiming, “I walked in on him doing it…or doing her, should I say.”

My face contorts in horror. “How the hell did you walk in on that?”

“I got some donuts from a new little bakery, and I went to surprise him.”

Her voice cracks as she tries to continue. “Dane, I walked into see Dad’s bare ass, fucking an old lady doggy style.”

“Jenny, for the love of God, stop. You’re going to make me lose my lunch.”

“If I have to have this mental image, so do you!”

“Is that why you called?” I ask. “Just to spread your misery?”

“Well, it does love company. But I think we should talk about what we’re going to do.”

“Do about what?”

“Dad and his raging libido!” She cries.

“What do you want to do about it, Jenny? Buy him some condoms?”

“You’re not funny, Dane.”

Seeing we have passed the point of making jokes about this, I say, “Okay, I need you to calm down. You’re freaking out over nothing.”

“Nothing? Seriously?”

“Come on, Jenny. Dad was in the military for years. His wife died when they were fairly young, and he was a good-looking guy. Hell, he’s probably in the best shape of anyone in that facility.”

Annoyed, she interrupts. “What’s your point?”

“What’s the big deal? Just let him have his fun.”

“Look, if he wants to have fun, I don’t care. But I think we at least need to talk to him about it.”

“Why do you keep saying we? This is your thing that has nothing to do with me.”

“He’s our father.”

I go to open my mouth, but she doesn’t let me get far.

“I’m not saying we stop him from screwing. But maybe we just talk to him and make sure this isn’t some desperate cry for help.”

My sister–the constant drama queen.

While I could sit here and argue with her all day, I know she probably isn’t going to let this go.

“Jenny, I really have to get out to practice before all the girls think I’m a no-show and go home. So, why don’t you just tell me what it is you want from me?”

“I want you to come over sometime soon. We will have a birthday party for Ashley, and we will talk to Dad while we’re all there.”

“And you think he’s going to willingly come over to have that talk?” I question.

“Didn’t you hear me? It’s Ashley’s birthday. We will have our typical party and do it then. He’s not going to miss his granddaughter’s birthday.”

I let out a loud sigh. “When are you going to have it? I’m pretty busy with this whole soccer thing.”

“You send me your schedule, and I’ll work around it.”

Another sigh.

“Okay. Fine. I’ll let you know.”

“You’re the best.”

It takes another minute before I’m able to get her off the phone. When I finally manage it, I hurry up and get to the soccer fields.

Who would’ve thought I would be excited to get to practice?
