Then she noticed how Jenner was looking from her to him. What was he thinking?

“Do you have family there? Are you missing people?” she asked. Why hadn’t she asked him this before?

“No family, Cherry,” he replied gruffly.

But he didn’t say that he wasn’t missing people. Yep, she was definitely selfish.

“You should tell Alejandro that you want to go back,” she told him.

He actually grinned at her. “Tell him? Nope, I like living.”

Was he saying that Alejandro would kill him if he told him what he wanted? No, that was crazy.

“Alejandro wouldn’t kill you. He’s actually a very nice man,” she informed him. “Very reasonable. I’m sure if you tell him you want to go back he’d be more than happy to let you.”

Did Jenner just groan? And why did he have his face pressed against her thighs?

Not that she was complaining or anything.

He could put his face there anytime he liked.

Urgh, Immy! What are you thinking?

What was wrong with her?

“What? What is it?” she asked. Even Sampson was gaping at her now. He still had his phone to his ear. She thought he was trying to get hold of Isaiah or Abe.

She was worried about them both.

“Did you seriously just call Alejandro a nice, reasonable man?” Sampson asked. He walked over and placed the back of his hand over her forehead. “Nope. She hasn’t got a fever. That doesn’t explain why she’s delusional.”

“Hey! I’m not delusional!”

“Baby,” Jenner said in a low voice, smiling up at her.

God. He was so darn gorgeous.

“What?”

“Alejandro is many things, nice is not one,” Jenner told her.

“He’s always been nice to me.”

Jenner’s smile widened. “That’s because you’re Immy. How could he not be nice to you? Everyone has to be nice to my Twinkles. It’s the law.”

That was sweet and kind.

And totally not true.

But she found herself melting and smiling back at him.

“I want you to stay with me here tonight, all right?” Jenner said firmly. And she knew that while it might have sounded like a request, it really wasn’t.

And for some reason, as she nodded, she flicked her gaze to Tobias. He met her gaze steadily and she was the one who looked away first.

This was starting to get incredibly complicated.

“You’re going to take the bed. I’ll take the sofa, Twinkles.”

No.

That wasn’t happening.

“I’ll take the sofa. I’m shorter and you need a good night’s sleep.”

She didn’t think she’d sleep anyway.

There was too much running through her brain for her to sleep.

“You need a good night’s sleep, baby,” he insisted. “We don’t want you getting sick.”

Everyone was always so worried about her. Concerned for her health. And she got it. But sometimes, she felt like a bit of a burden.

“Hey, look at me.” Jenner walked over to where she was standing in the living room, feeling a bit lost.

Jenner had taken her to her room to get her things so she was hugging Snowy tight for comfort right now.

He gently cupped her chin, tilting her face back. God, she loved when he touched her like this.

“Listen to me, nothing is going to happen to you.”

He’d misunderstood her reaction.

“It’s not about me. I was so scared for Maeve. Thank God she’s all right. I just . . . he’s dead so that should be the end of things, right?”

So why did she feel so weird? As if something bad was coming and she couldn’t stop it.

“He’s dead,” Jenner said firmly. “Maeve is safe and Gray will keep her that way. You are safe and we will keep you that way.”

“I want you guys to all be safe too.”

He gave her that sweet smile. The one he saved for his family. Jenner was charming and gorgeous. Women all over the country swooned over him. But he only gave his family this smile, this gentleness.

And she loved that.

“All right.” She let out a deep breath, trying to ease the knot of tension in her stomach.

“And you’re going to sleep in the bed.”

“But I’m smaller,” she protested. “I’ll fit on the sofa better.”

“It folds out, baby,” he replied. “I’ll be fine on it. I want you to use the bathroom and get ready for bed. Off you go.” He turned her toward the bathroom and lightly patted her back.

Immy’s heart was racing as she grabbed her toiletries and pajamas and headed into the bathroom.

She needed to calm down.

It wasn’t the first time she’d slept with Jenner close by and it wouldn’t be the last.

She hoped.

After getting ready, she headed back into the bedroom. Jenner was doing something at the bed and surprise filled her as she saw he’d arranged the pillows into a U-shape.

“There you are. Your nest is all ready for you.”

Snowy was already in the nest, waiting for her.

“Thank you.”

“Get into bed. I’ll tuck you in.”

She closed her eyes for a moment as he disappeared into the bathroom. Jenner always took such good care of her. She opened her eyes and got into bed, patting at the pillows and setting them in the right place so she felt secure.

Then Jenner appeared and drew the covers up over her.

And that feeling of being safe increased.

There was nothing Immy loved more than being taken care of. Or being able to take care of the people she loved.

“Are you sure you’ll be all right on the couch? I really don’t mind sleeping on it.”

“Twinkles, there’s no way in hell you’re sleeping on the couch. Not only is it a couch but it’s close to the door. You’re going to be in here, safe, with me between you and the door.”

It was old-fashioned.

It was also incredibly sweet.

So she decided to give up arguing about who slept where.

“I don’t know if I can sleep, though,” she told him.

He brushed her hair off her face. It was a wild mess once more. She should have braided it before she went to bed.

“Sit up for a moment and face away from me. I’ll be back.”

But she’d just gotten comfortable! However, she did as she was told. To her surprise, he returned with her hairbrush and a hair tie. Sitting behind her, he started brushing her hair.

Oh, that felt so nice.

She closed her eyes and felt herself starting to relax. Then he quickly braided her hair.

“That’s it, Twinkles. Just relax. Lie down now.”

She snuggled into her nest and he tucked her back in. Then she felt him kiss her forehead.

Immy didn’t want him to leave, but she didn’t have any reason to ask him to stay. But he didn’t leave, instead he quietly started singing.

That was the last thing she remembered before she fell asleep.
